is this guy great or what! i can listen to his stuff for
hours and enjoy myself. best thing that happend to me music
wise since analord was released. bit of info. it's the
guy who contributed a few songs for broken flowers
soundtrack. there's a whole bunch of his songs in the
ethiopiques series...makes me want to move to ethiopia or
jamaica and smoke dope until the day i die. seriously,
fcuking awesome music to chill to <3

Never heard of it to tell the truth, but

"The cover photo, featuring Duke Ellington holding an
African instrument as he jams with Mulatu Astatke,
highlights the album's Ethiopian jazz sound."

Quite like the few bits of Duke Ellington that I've heard,
and you're right, jazz like this is seriously good to smoke
dope to all day long. Only really scratching the surface
with jazz, as there's just so much good stuff out there, and
I'm too devoted to my techno to have the time to explore
much myself, so, thanks, muchaco apreciato por lo
recomendato!

"Only really scratching the surface with jazz"

same here..as i said before im scared to get into jazz
properly as i fear it would take too much time if it hits me
properly. for now i'll stay with these famous guys and start
discovering proper underground jazz in a few years time :)

as for techno, im quite disappointed in most of the newer
stuff, there's hardly anyting new, appart from the big guys
(aphex, autechre) and older guys who're still in the
business (dockstader and rereleases of old electronica
albums). also, i've been getting into acid music again, all
the way back to chicago and detroit.

but my fav thing of the moment is noise rock/ electronica
weirdness, gotta love that :)

i dunno, i've been listening to lots of old wacky pop.
and tonnes of world music. i promise to keep you posted. :)

not finding too much time to come here lately... there isn't
too much reason for me too not that i'm bitter or anything,

I have a question about the ethiopiques thing

is 04 only mulatu? He seems to be credited as the
main artist, but it's kind of confusing as this seems to be
a very compilation-ish series... If it isn't all Mulatu, I'd
like to know if anyone knows who the other artists are so
that I can track down their other releases too...

Info!

Seems like he plays on all tracks. Other musicians also
listed in the link...

yeah, that's what it seems like, but I just wanted to be
sure because the series usually is a compilation thing...
but yeah I think it's him on all tracks.. though I question
how much credit he should take for having written yèkèremo
sèw, as it's very very very similar to horace silver's song
for my father... I actually want these tracks on vinyl, but
some of them don't seem to be available outside of on that
cd...

how come I have one lp not listed there?

4 is credited to mulatu..and i doubt you will be able to get
this on vinyl. unless you maybe try in some second hand
record shops in ethiopia.

btw, i moved from ethiopiques onto all sorts of different
african things..so much absolutely brilliant music..you get
an awesome song on almost every album/compilation..or maybe
that's just my luck. however i won't go in details as
everyone should find their own path :D :D

the ethiopiques thing isn't printed on anything but cd, but
I got afro-latin soul on vinyl just today, actually.. I was
tired of just having mp3s. I'm going to buy ethio-jazz next

do you masakatsus rehome, btw?

I'm trying to get my hands on "hard" copies of all his
stuff, but in the meantime I'd just like to have the mp3s
for listening. I've managed to get eating and eating 2 on
vinyl, but the other ones seem a bit less accessible or just
really really expensive, like coieda.

oh, right, I actually have a question about that

would you call mulatus stuff acid jazz? I never got the hang
of genres, but people want to know what it is in situations
where I don't have the music with me.

no, that was about takagi masakatsu, not mulatu. I just

you may have more?

I've got a few artists I'm trying to find the entire
