I think bemoaning the name IDM has become beyond a joke. No
one says IDM except when they're fannying on about the name
IDM. Only about 3,000 worldwide are aware of the term, and
most of them have never said it out loud.

Is it because it's the new year, some server glitch has
plunged the board into 1996?

maybe it's a sign we're running out of things to talk about.
the music itself is, even among fans, associated (rightly
or wrongly) with the socially retarded and nerdily inclined,
and the music is, by most accounts, commercially dead and
yesterday's news. yet the number of releases continues to
increase exponentially and paradoxically, meaning that even
the extremely interested will have only heard less than one
percent of the total output, resulting in messageboards that
consist of endless dissections of the few recordings
everyone has heard and lots of threads about albums that
almost no one has heard, threads that drift out with the
tide never to be seen again, and it occurs to me this very
moment that i've had too much coffee.

my cup overfloweth, does anyone have some soda water and
salt i could borrow?

i don't think we're worked up so much as worked out. we've
been trapped in a moebius, a twist in the fabric of space
where time becomes a loop.

People who do their own thing will get by without genre
tags.

People that make generic IDM deserve to have their work
labelled IDM. And just as well, it makes it easier to avoid.

sooner or later a journalist will come up with some new,
noxious label, and then we'll start all over again.

"squamo is such a terrible name for this music."

"what do you say when people ask "what does sqaumo sound
like?""

"i'm embarrassed to tell people that i listen to squamo."

"who the fuck decided to call this squamo?"

"i heard a commercial that used a squamo track the other
day."

i'm sorry, i've done it again and said too much.

just "electronica" people tend to distinguish this from
ministry-of-sound-cheap-commercial-dance-crap etc anyway, so
it works.

or u could just say "wierd stuff"

the term idm is actually probably more widely recognised
than you'd think (hence why i use it sometimes). i'd agree
it's a stupid fucking term, though, that should be clear to
anybody.

that's just it though, a lot of "IDM" is hardly experimental
these days; the techniques are well known.

096;ee HOT 080; that is great. you can really confuse people
with that.

"what music are you into?"
"i like zero nine six semicolon eeeeeee-hot zero eighty
semicolon stuff. its cool"

Abstract Electronic Music aint too bad. some of it is
definately abstract (most autechre, etc.) so its definately
fitting for some artists at least.
