What do you have? Instruments? equipment? monitors? I'm only in the beginning of a collection of hardware that I hope will be useful some day...
M-Audio Ozone (my favorite hardware) Behringer DX626 (a beginner mixer, but it sure works for me) Yamaha Portasound PSS-480 (FM Synth...old school) Roland SP-404 (this' my baby...a sampler boosted with 1gb CF-card)
Boss SYB-5 (a synth-pedal for my bass-guitars) Boss CEB-3 (bass-chorus that makes my bass sound like Les Claypool...at least in my head)
Behringer Thunderbird BX-108 (my bass-amp...but it sucks cuz' it's small) Sony MDR-7506 (best head-phones i've ever owned) Cort Action Bass V a very cheap 5-string bass...but it's quite ok)
Aria Pro II Laser Electric Heritage (my favorite bass-guitar...it's from 1984)
I also have an acoustic guitar and a fretless bass, but they are not worth mentioning to much about ;)
I'm looking into buying some real monitors an

I was just kidding, I have a girlfriend :)
The whole "you can make music with any tool" argument kind of aggrivates me, because 1-Thats true, if you want to make any kind of music but 2-Certain sounds require certain tools (its very difficult to get a rich analogue filter sweep with an FM or VA synthesizer, its difficult to get those rich FM Belltones and percussive sounds with a VA subtractive synthesizer, and its really hard to get any usable sound off of an old casio rompler). The way I see it, use what you have, but if you find something that can get you a certain sound that you are looking for, then get it.
As well, if you look at it as a painter, they can make any color with three basic colors, but sometimes if you want to use orange paint, its easier to have orange paint at hand instead of trying to mix two or three colors together to get the color you are looking for. As well, generally, higher quality tools yield higher quality results. Not saying more expensive=more good (you can get some very high quality inexpensive gear).
Sometimes less is more, but sometimes a certain job requires a certain tool.

Taxi, you're bang on the money.
I've made some insane synth patches (that have been used for whole tracks) using just one synth and a loads of effects and modulation on it. I also gotten far better sounds from "toy" synths than popular opinion would suggest you could; I managed to get a realistic (people though it was a sample) snoring sound out of Reason's subtractor uasing only that and internal effects. Whilst it's fun to do things like that from time to time and doing so certainly helps you understand how to sculpt sound, doing it all the time is incredibly masochistic and not very productive.
An amazing pad that would take 2 hours or so on an EA-1 with a load of effects can be made (obviously not identically, but near enough) in about 5 minutes in z3ta+ or absynth.
I sometimes poke fun at people who use the latter (amazing synths) as a crutch because they can't make good sounds without them, or even program approximations of effects like gating, delay, flanging, reverb, etc. in a sequencer. However, for the same reason as you cite with the coloured paint, it's not neccessary and doing it that way all the time doesn't make your music any better. I remember ecnadniarb taking the mick out a track someone (who'd obviously just learnt to cut breaks) who proudly presented a track they had done, and ecnad said the bloke could of saved some time and just run the basic loop through supatrigger several times. :)
Reaktor nerds are a bit of a pet peeve of mine in that like hi-fi nerds, the music is really secondary to them and they just like the process/technology. No harm in that in itself, and some great ensembles have come out reaktor (again, I have used it and made a synth for a particular purpose myself in it), but a hell of a lot of them are like freeware synthedit ones; CPU inefficient and not sounding very different at all to other cheap/basic synths.
Basically, I definately think it's good to be able to mix paint to get exactly what you want for some parts, but doing it all the...

...time is a massively inefficient way of working. It also often doesn't make your tracks any better. Look at Aphex Twin, one of the most respected artists we talk about here and how often does he use stock, very lightly fx'd 909/707/606 drums?
His programming is so good that it doesn't really matter exactly how the snare sounds.
Anyway, rant over. People can do what they like with their music, so long as they're having fun.
