the origin of IDM (again...)

i have heard different theories, but that one is new for me
and actually kinda reliable.

"Richard Devine: I think the name was tagged back in the
early days of the newsgroup called IDM, which was founded by
Alan M. Parry. Originally it was just a news forum for fans
talking about Aphex Twin. Eventually more music started to
come out during this time with the emergence of the
Artificial Intelligence compilations and the Warp label. The
list soon became a discussion group for all music that
sounded like Aphex Twin."

i thought it came from future sound of london, and orb, and
people of that nature...cause it wasnt just cliche dance,
house, whatever music...

what do i know though...that genre name is gayer than
breakcore

It's such a fucking crap genre-name.
There are lots of smart people making dancefloor tracks, and
lots of geeky idiots making "Intelligent" dance music. All
the drum and bass/house/techno/electro innovators were
fucking geniuses for inventing the foundations of dance
music in the first place. Even shit trance producers are
smart enough to make a buck out of their cheesy tracks.

Mariah Carey is hot and an awesome singer. Like my mate at
work says when he sees a fit girl "I would treat her like a
fucking princess."

She's a nice and sensitive girl. She went suicidal after one
of her boyfriends left her. Beautiful voice.

stuff though.

the problem with IDM is most artists quite clearly span
several genres but it seems wrong to put one person in
multiple categories, we just need a vague blanket term but
none seems quite right. 'Electronica' is okay but Iambic
Poetries etc make that one a bit off too

offline hinotori on 2006-01-04 20:36 [#01812384]

"music" is a nice term and has been quite reliable for a
long time.
though i think that has some issues too.

electronic music.... hmm not all electronic really...

exellent electronic music.... some is ok.

"stuff" , , . . . ahh thats nice.

i listen to stuff
i eat stuff
i like stuff
i excrete stuff

wow! its so versatile :)

stuff is the best one probably

i ususlly use the term "loads of wierd shit" or sometimes
"all sorts of random crap" when describing to people what
sort of music i like.

IDM is just a blanket term for a bunch of artists who don't
really fit in particular electronic subgenres.

not really, there's acertain aestethic in IDM wich is common
in almost all artists. it's hard to put into words, but it's
there.

offline Ezkerraldean from the lowest common denominator (United Kingdom) on 2006-01-05 11:31 [#01812724]
Points: 5733 Status: Addict

yeah, id agree. i reckon there are prolly 3 styles within
"IDM" too -

slightly more ambient chillout stuff (BoC etc.)
proper abstract stuff (autechre, some aphex)
drill and bass etc (some squarepusher, muziq, some aphex)
