Hi guys, I've been wondering, what exactly are these 303
things? What do they do? I like music, and would like to
create it, but I clueless about these things. If you have a
909, would it be wise to still use a 303 as well? etc...

Some search engine for finding information, like info about
303s etc? Why do you ask?

i thought you had posted your music here before. you had a
"listen to my music and i'll listen to yours" thread.

and as i recall, you never listened to my music. you
fucking tricked me into listening to your music, you
bastard.

for this reason, i can't reveal the secret of the 303 to
you.

i can explain that here basicly, the TB303 is used for the
acid bassline sound in ACID music, and the TR x0x ones are
mostly used in the same music too. Tr606 was the drummachine
brother of the tb303. The TR-x0x ones are all drummachines.

clear?
clear.
listen ceephax
you'll get it

Too late to enter, but read down that thread and you should
find a DL of Re-birth 2.0. A pretty good software emulation
of the 303,808 and 909. Enjoy.

The transistor bass 303 was supposed to be a realistic
bass-partner for serious musicians, but because the sound
was so unrealistic nobody bought them and they became dirt
cheap.

Then some poor black people in detroit started buying them
at their low price and eventually figured out that tweaking
the cut/res in realtime while the pattern was playing could
create some very cool and squelchy sounds; acid.

Then people's love of the 303 blew out of all proportion and
people started paying way over the odds for a very limited
bit of hardware, in the misguided belief that buying a
genuine 303 (as opposed to using the near-indistinguishable,
once mastered, Audiorealism Bassline VST) will give them the
programming skills of Mssrs. Atkins, May, Saunderson, et al.

i suggest to Roland that if they want to continue the series
they should take hex numbers to follow the three-number
where first and last are same and the middle one is nothing
but a zero tradition, like: Roland TRA0A, B0B and so on
until the F letter.

hahaha what programming skills ??
they used to take the batteries out + put em back in to get
it to fill with random patterns
:)

offline Ceri JC from Jefferson City (United States) on 2005-12-20 07:27 [#01803795]

A couple of them admitted to doing that on some
tracks, but then that's sort of filtered by their good taste
actually selecting which of those patterns to use. Then
there's going back and tweaking those random patterns to,
for example, eliminate one note that doesn't work, or change
the U/S/A/D settings. There's also the performance aspect of
their use of rhythmically twisting the cutoff/res. knobs
which a lot of people seem not too 'get' and instead do
rather mechanically, if at all.

I don't know what it is, but there's something tragically
mediocre about a lot of acid lines and the truly killer ones
are a rare event.

! in phuture acid trax im thinking about. its chewy

What would you suppose Aphex used for Byddhonchord? And how
about Squarepusher on Theme from Ernest Borgnine? Whatever
Autechre used for Incunabula is magical...

Well, the lovely melodies in Theme from Ernest Borgnine are
made with an SH-101, except for the last few minutes - that
acid bassline is the TB-303. Also, the drums on Bike and
Autriche from Incunabula were made with a TR-606.

I used to own a 303, but I sold it when I was broke. The 202
is loads better though. My friend has one - it is great fun
to play with and the sounds are so good you just want to eat
them.
