I was fucking around on www.pandora.com and I searched for
Chromeo...Then i got this fucking GREAT song by Fred Avril
and now i'm listening to Skinny Puppy!

Anyone recommend a good Skinny Puppy album for a skinny
puppy newbie?

yes! although I liked the Fred Avril song more... skinny
puppy is cool.

by the way, Chromeo's "me and my man" is a fucking great
song. soooooo gay/funny in a great way.

Who is Fred Avril?

search for him on www.pandora.com

i've only heard one song called "the date" but it's fuckin'
awesome.

it's like a mix of prince and IDM. the production on the
beat even sounds like Bola's production, it's crunchy like
he's using noise and envelops nakedly, without many filters.

Ahh damn, I have not listened enough. I'm listening to
'Assimilate' right now and it's great.

what's 'Assimilate'?

I only have Too Dark Park but it's fantastic. So I guess I
can reccommend that. I have a burned copy of their singles
collection too, which is good, but it's not very coherent.

I only have Too Dark Park also heh, but I have some random
mp3's of older songs, two especially 'Assimilate' and 'Dig
It', I think I like it better than the stuff on Too Dark
Park.

Oh that's right, they had a new album sort of recently. I
seem to remember listening and thinking it was really very
bad.

well, maybe there's one good track.

but anyways,

you should listen to Fred Avril because it's really solid.
I rarely react to music this much.

by far the best skinny puppy album is Last Rights

but if you are a bit of a novice, i recommend Rabies, or Too
Dark Park.

Not much music is more intense than Last Rights. Killing
Game gets to a mo'fukkin' fever pitch like I can't believe.
I'd go with that but you can't go wrong with Too Dark Park
or Cleanse or anything. I've got a soft spot for Remission
and it might be my favorite but I wouldn't recommened it
over the newest, it probably wouldn't make the impression
the later ones can.

It seems that the most commonly cited favorite Skinny Puppy
albums are Too Dark Park and Last Rights. I would
definately go with one of those. Last Rights can be quite
intense at times.

Please ignore whoever said the new album was horrible, and
give it a listen for yourself.

Also, be sure to look up and albums by Download. Furnace
and The Eyes of Stanley Pain have a lot of the Skinny Puppy
intensity. While III is a masterpiece of ambient techno (or
whatever, it's easily one of my all time favorties. I'm
willing to say there's not a track on it that's not
incredible)

Their side project Doubting Thomas is worth picking up.

The only Skinny Puppy album I would avoid is The Process,
the new album 'The Greater Wrong of the Right' is
fantastic.

Autechre do a remix of the Killing Game on 'Remix Dystemper'
which really isn't that good but interesting non the less.
But the original track on 'Last Rights' is great.

i really like remission as well. many memories. it's very
different though than the later stuff. very 80's sounding.
it's from a time when the skinny puppy guys all had hair
like Robert Smith.

010101: I agree The Process is certainly lacking, but there
are a couple pretty good trax on there. 'Candle' for one is
a damn good track. but overall the album has little
continuity, the absense of goettel is quite apparant.

Hello Hello Hello

Thanks to all that replied here. I’ll start by listening
to “Too Dark Park” as that seems like a good starter;
it’s still early(ish) in their career. Although the new
one seems to be really good, based on what I’ve heard.
Maybe I’ll buy both.
