Bark Psychosis - Hex
Mogwai - Young Team

So much that I got a t-shirt.

Hey Combo, how about you just miss this one opportunity to
display to all and sundry you haven't a clue what you're
talking about?

I can think of lots of groups I would consider either the
indirect founders of post rock or that would later be known
as Post Rock... but it gets a bit hazy with Post Punk. Say
Durutti Column, I'd put him in both camps. Do you recall
when they tried to call it Math Rock, holy fuck! Luckily it
all went Jazz and then that was the end of the scene, like
what happened with Rock, Drum n Bass, electronica and pretty
much every other genre.

spirit of eden is just totally brilliant. i know i will
never tire of listening to it. and eventually i'll probably
like laughing stock as much when i mature a bit more.

low are superb. their unique style of vocal harmonies and
slow grunge guitars are a match made in heaven. their last
album was a bit odd, almost "happy" which made uncomfortable
listening. but 'things we lost in the fire' and 'trust' are
must-listens.

But what about but what about but what bout but what about
have you got Mark Hollis' solo album?

O.Rang as well, some other members of Talk Talk, I liked
some of their material, with Graham Sutton of Bark Psychosis
in there somewhere too.

i do have it. in fact i bought it! it's even more difficult
on the ear, i'll have to go back to it at some point. all i
remember about it is that it's even more sparse than
laughing stock, but an obvious continuation into the
obscure.

Please explain why the many people that regard Talk Talk's
"Spirit of Eden" and "Laughing Stock" as the corner stones
of Post-Rock are all wrong. Use some of the information
found in this LAZY_Google search on Talk Talk + Post
Rock
that returns 176.000 results to back up your
argument.

in terms of what is definitely within the historical bounds
of post-rock... um, maybe just TNT and the self-titled the
For Carnation album... but when you open up the term as it
has been in this thread (and i agree with its opening for
the record... because there isn't much to distinguish
post-rock proper from a lot of music which wouldn't quite
get tagged as such):

Low- I Could Live in Hope
Talk Talk- Spirit of Eden
and uh... hmm... i dunno there really isn't that many
undisputed classics...

What's MBV then? As I said, and THE LEGEND OF ALL MUSIC
KNOWLEDGE Dead Eight said, to just stick to what
historically was labelled "Post Rock" would probably begin
and end with Tortoise, maybe Godspeed your whatever. BUT,
the fact of the matter is, there are albums that came before
the popularity of the term Post Rock that went without any
easy labels or genre tagging, and were a direct influence on
what would become Post Rock. I would put My Bloody Valentine
among them and cite them under Post Rock accordingly, as if
you want to call them Shoegazers, I'd have to punch you.

i'm kind of not clear on why post rock only starts in the
90s and not in, say for example, the 70s

I think it's, if anything, Post Punk II.

offline dog_belch from Netherlands, The on 2005-11-19 15:17 [#01782545]

Jimi Hendrix I'd stick in post rock.

which would mean that the latest wave of (faux) post punk
would have to be at least Post Punk III or IV...

I can't believe how people can listen to crapy bands such as
Godspeed or Silver Mt Zion ! Their music is just boring
bullshit with dull melodies.
Tortoise and Sigrus ros are not a lot better.
