I have recently been coming to terms with the idea of being dissapointed with drukQs. After carefully listening to both icbyd and rdjalbum, these works seem much more complete than drukQs.
This isn't to say i'm dissapointed with the release, but Richard has released much better in my opinion. What do you think?
and yeah, i know, this has probably been discussed before for the rest of eternity forever amen.

No, I think that ICBYD is a complete waste of time when compared with DrukQs. RDJ is almost as good.

I think drukQs is not a complete work, it seems so mish-mashed, thrown together, not taken the same strucctual care that rdj was taken with. I mean, icbyd was technically a compilation of tracks aphex had made between 93-95, but because they are so technologically similar, it seems like such a cohesive album.
i'm bantering now...

drukqs was the first rdj, or anything in the realm of "idm", that i ever heard, so i was most certainly not dissapointed.
quite the opposite actually, i was fucking blown away, especially considering i was stoned as fuck. it was some of the first music id heard that seemed to transcend some barrier and really become art.
on another note, icbyd is probably rdjs best work. no gimmicks, no goofiness, just pure beaty bliss.

no. but it was my first aphex twin album. : )
it's been probably two or three years since i've listened to it in its entirety nevertheless... i'd have prefered it to be 1-cd instead of 2 personally. but it's ok, since some people seem to want even more. i still like the piano tracks a lot but the drill'n'bass ones bore/annoy me a bit now.

Absolutely not. I don't know any other album that had track transitions as good as drukqs. Each song on there shifted into so many different ideas. It was jam packed. One of the best rdj releases.

analords are not a new step into the future, but they are greatly arranged, and sweet after all

If you had asked me before I did the analord-mixes, I'd be a bit kinder. But I guess that project took some of the joy out of the tracks. I'm on a strict non-analord diet now, to perhaps regain some of the loss.

Its nice to see an artist have fun with tracks. I think more emotion comes across with that sometimes.
I guess to cover the topic title i think people are often too critical of artists. In the case of DrukQs i notice that often times people set standards for the artist, instead of letting the artist set the standard.
Overall i think the best way to listen to music is to try to see what the artist wants to portray as opposed to what i want to hear. I can hear what i want, whenever i want. But when you listen to something unique that isnt oftentimes something you listen to it can be a real rewarding experience.

Druqks blew my head off in 2001 - it sounded so alien and complex but perfect. As the years pass, and as I learn more about making music I can understand more about how Ritchie made these sounds - but it still impresses me.
I hear people (mainly reviewers) going on about how stale Druqks was - treading water, unfocused etc, well I can't hear that at all, I tend to class it as a more mature and thought out album. This is the same guy who produced SAWII and Analord - his 'serious composer' frame of mind. ICBYD and RDJ album, great as they are always appear to me to be just a prime selection of goofy tracks he had on his harddrive at the time.
