is it true to your real-life personality? i've started thinking about this a lot recently.. my online personality is totally different to what I'm like in real life. I approximately have 5 or 6 different online personas, but use two the most. even if i chat with friends from school on an IM client, the untruthful and fake ones slip in. In real life, i'm usually rather serious, friendly and try to be kind. online i'm usually one of the following: -serious, when i want to find out a bit of information, or am "around people" whose knowledge i respect -utterly obnoxious. this happens mostly on IRC with computer science students from college. I don't like computer science students. they smell bad, they act in real life as if they're on IRC, and they don't have lives. -bizarre. this happens a lot with CS students when I don't feel like being a prick. it happens a lot on xlt as well, when I feel completely disenchanted with the place. this one writes mainly in obscure allusions, symbolic language, and language that ridicules and satirises others, but to an extreme extent.. almost to the extent of a charicature. i needed to get that off my chest. especially the third point. it's been bugging me for a long time. it annoys me when i try to talk to people on the net normally, and just can't because i'm in one of these other personas already, in a seperate window. I wonder whether this is spilling over and influencing the way I interact with people in real-life too, and that worries me, since I cannot control which persona I adapt when talking to old friends on the internet, just because i'm sitting in front of a screen. |

My humor and taste and personality and everything are pretty much as I present it online but I can't really express it offline because I'm insanely aloof and distant to the Nth degree. Not only do I have trouble being myself in real life, but I also have little or no desire to. I can make ''thoughest poster'' lists on messageboards, but in person, I say nothing. Actually I guess you could say I have roughly the same persona, but I can only express it remotely, which is fine with me. The major difference, and it may or may not be really major, is that I like to remain a lone wolf in real life but be part of communities online. |

Im a lot more negative online. A lot chattier and opinionated as well. My humor is the same, but it doesn't translate well into text, so I end up mocking myself more to make fun of the fact that I can't joke around as easily. Online personas are a lot like puberty. |
