Am I honestly the only one...

....who doesn't like lyrics in music?

On rare occasions, I like it, but most of the time I don't
want to think about music or have people telling me what to
think about their music in it.

I hear enough people talking during my day, I don't want to
listen to them when I am trying to relax. Either to relax
or to set a mood are the two reasons I listen to music.
Lyrics seem to make the mood so blatantly obvious and
contrived for me that it feels diluted.

A few exceptions. I do listen to music with lyrics if I
can't understand them, because then I can relate to them as
an instrument and nothing more.

I can deal with a few words, as they serve as a good breakup
for the music, but when singing dominates a whole song, I
can't take it.

That's exactly what I have a problem with. I will enjoy
songs with lyrics once in a while, but I too don't want my
thoughts to be "directed" or influenced by lyrics in music;
I can relax and imagine things much more easily with
instrumental music.

i mostly prefer instrumental music.

most lyrics are uninteresting to me, and i find if i compare
what i hear to a lyric sheet i always prefer the inaccurate,
distorted version.

so you're not alone.

i don't like it when lyrics are repeated over and over; when
the second verse is the same as the first.

i am a dog
i sniff my but
i am dog
a smelly mut

i am a dog
i am a dog

i am a dog
i sniff my but
i am dog
a smelly mut

i am a dog
i am a...DOG.

but that's nonsense really, i have no problems with lyrics.

Yeah lyrics, I mean WHAT'S THAT ALL ABOUT??????? and
like songs, I mean they're totally, like linear and in a
rigid structure of, like, WORDS and MUSIC, HELLO you
can't have BOTH y'know... God... words, I mean words
about... stuff that limits what the MUSIC could be about. I
want it left to my interpretation. I mean, I mean, I mean, I
mean imagine right, imagine Gantz Graf with
lyrics!!!!!!!!!???!?!?! Fucking ruin it, what would the song
be about, you know "love" or some other cliché. Tsssh.
Fucking singing.

you must not be a fan of hip hop - which i think is a shame

one song that proves how great lyrics are is

"word play" by bahamadia !!!

Personally, i dont like lyrics in electronic music. Often
times (if someone is singing) it comes across as awkward. I
stayed away from the new Telefon Tel Aviv because i heard
that it had vocals. That ruined me in advance. But on the
other hand i like vocals in various bands so i guess it
comes down to genre for me.

I like lots of music, actually, I just should have said that
I am much less often in the mood to listen to anything with
lyrics. I actually do like hiphop when the voice is an
instrument, not a means by which to brag about bitches and
the such. I actually prefer them to have nonsense lyrics.

I tend to agree. I like many rock bands that use lyrics, but
the stuff I actually appreciate the most artistically is
instrumental. It seems more pure. Lyrics can be well done,
but sometimes it kinda cheapens the music.. brings it back
down to reality when it could have been transcendant, so to
speak.

Electronic music often seems to be better without lyrics,
whereas culturally specific music, music that is obviously a
product of its time and makes references to current
trends/ideologies (usually rock) is well suited to it.. even
needs it. Naturally, however, this can be reversed, i.e.
artrock vs. pop trance.

Sometimes I like lyrics/vocals and sometimes... I don't.
Some music I listen to has lyrics/vocals and some...
doesn't. I love it when it's in another language, real or
fictional. Sometimes I want VOCALS, but not LYRICS. The
human voice is really nice but it can say some pretty
asinine things at times.

Lyrics rule though wtflol

i care about lyrics and when i love a track i always want to
know the lyrics to it... it happened me several times to not
know and not search the lyrics to some song/album for
months, but it annoys me when the lyrics aren't included in
the booklet nor on the official site; especially when
they're hard to decipher. i'd really like to know the lyrics
to melvins songs for example; if you search them on the
internet you'll find dozens of sometimes really different
interpretations... no way to know. no way to really sing
along even in your head (unless you do "yogurt singing" -
but that's more annoying and frustrating than anything
else).

there are very very few songs i listen to for the lyrics and
not for the music (one of them being Nous n'avons fait
que fuir
by Noir Désir/Bertrand Cantat - sorry people,
it's in french).

when the lyrics to some song i know are crap i usually feel
a bit ashamed of liking it.
Eels' lyrics (among others) are pretty great in my opinion.

I can't really think of ANYTHING that I listen to
exclusively or particularly for the lyrics... maybe Leonard
Cohen kind of, but even then, I think his melodies and
aesthetics are underrated. I love singing along to his
songs.

There's precious little lyricists that can write stuff that
I can relate to or that moves me, yet I still love lyrics.
I'm not even sure why. Most of my favorite songs have
lyrics that mean nothing to me but I wouldn't have it any
other way.
