I just had this given to me from a friend at work the other
day, and its taken up most of my free time since. Well, on
and off. Its kind of like doom3, with its way too much
creepy to play for long sittings at night, and since night
is mostly when I play my games, then its five minutes here
and ten minutes there. The gunfights are crazy fun. I don't
know of any other games that have realistic recoil with the
different weapoms, or allow you to peer around corners for
cover. Its kind of neat. I thought the demo was a little
ghetto, but the full version seems to fit perfectly.

The previews looked bad but I guess it got good reviews.
But I do know a lot of games where you can lean out of
corners?

I played the demo and it was quite fun. Didn't run too well
on my computer which pissed me off. It's not top of the
range but it's not exactly a shit computer. It ran Doom 3 OK
so it should run this OK too. I hate badly optimised code.
Half-Life 2 is a great example of optimised code.

I wasn't expecting much, expecially after playing the demo,
but its actually pretty fun. And the horror seems to work in
this. Overall, quite pleased.

This game is exellent!

I just reached the Watchers level and this is really
freaking me out.
I'm not scared easely but playing this game with headphones
really messes with my mind, all the freaky noises and
flashback shit gives this game a spooky character. Doom 3 is
nothing compared to this.

Some kind of ultrafast creature is giving me a hard time
right now.

heh... this game is extremely unsettling. Expecially with
all the atmospheric sounds.

How can you say this? I was scared shitless many times while
playing Doom 3. Not once was I scared by F.E.A.R.. I think
the execusion of the horor aspect is very weak. The scripts
were so badly written that often the only thing I noticed
from the "scary" part was the music change. Wining again.

What is the creature you have problems with? That
disappearing guy? I found it much easier to kill him without
slo-mo. Just wait there against the wall and have the butt
of your gun ready. If it's the spirit during the vision,
just go away from the fire and you'll have no problem with
noticing them.

Always ready for a rant, always ready for advice.

The gunfights were unmatched though.

I don't know. I'm finding the horror better executed in
this. Doom was much less subtle. This kind of works off of
what your not being shown ie; your kind of wandering around
expecting something to jump out at you, and you step on a
can, causing a ruckus and making you jump. And the sounds
that you make when walking in water, how it always sounds
like there is someone walking right behind you. The parts
where the real nightmarish stuff are supposed happen are a
bit cheesy, like the skeleton jumping out at you or the
swimming in blood.

But parts like that time when you are in the underground
tunnel, and all these rats are running away from the area
you have to head into, and every time you look somewhere you
get a glimpse of a leg or another kind of movement... I
remember thinking that I couldn't escape fast enought...
creepiness.

offline QRDL from Poland on 2005-10-26 05:36 [#01761470]
Points: 2838 Status: Lurker

Yes, Doom was less subtle and I should really prefer FEAR,
but for some reason it really didn't click with me. It far
too much resembled some cliched Japanese horror.
BUT, I must admit that I hadn't had such a good time
shooting since Max Payne (HL2 and D3 were wonderful, but for
another reasons) and it is far far better than Quake 4.

One gripe i've got with the game is that too many keys are
required to do the slo mo moves and the guns are a little
unrepsonsive.

Not playied it much, it seems pretty awesome though.

i hadn't heard anything about this game until now... I saw
some screenshots that looked amazing and some others that
looked awful, and have decided not to play the demo since I
get the feeling that it poorly represents the actual game.
I'll probably get a torrent version to test it, and if it's
good enough (mainly, if it has replay value), ill buy it.

I finished in about 2 days and not playing it heavily, I
might add.

it's quite a short game.

all my little opinions on F.E.A.R. are in the "now playing
(videogame edition)"-thread.

I find it very strange that F;E;A;R; didn't scare you at
all, I guess you are a tough guy ;)

well, I do think that the horror portion of the game isn't
dosed very well - there are whole stretches of game where
nothing horrific happens. and the horror things that are in
there are quite clichéed.

I have to agree with the Gamespot review - some of the most
tense parts are where you're walking around these abandoned
offices and absolutely nothing happens.

anyway - next year fall there'll be the add-on, which
supposedly picks up right where F.E.A.R. ends.

You know, I always avoid the threads that have hundreds of
entries. I know its adds to the clutter a bit, but it would
be nice if there was a way to filter or organize larger
threads, like they had in the old warpforum.

I was just playing a long session for the first time, really
fucking enjoying myself, until those quick invisible
bastards came along...

what's the best way to beat 'em?

Theoretically it would be using slo-mo, but for me the most
efficient way involved standing still against a wall,
waiting and using the shotgun or its butt in just the right
moment.

screw the shotgun butt, I blasted those things to
smitherines with the business end of the shotgun. quite
effective if I do say so myself. didn't use slowmo either,
not because I was trying to show off, but because for me
slowmo just seemed wasted waiting for those things to
appear...

im surprised people find this so scary, I got this for my
brothers birthday and he's having problems with it too. It
didnt have this effect on me. Apart from the bit where you
go down the ladder and see the girl, that was genuinely
unexpected.

Otherwise I had no problems playing this at night til the
wee wee hours. Some of the horror elements were a bit
cliched and by the time the 345th figure appears and
dissapears in a cloud of ashes it gets to be a bit expected.

The combat makes the game, the horror fails on most points,
but does really well on others. I didnt like to be
constantly finding those laptops as I grew sick of seeing
them and never used them.

I wish the same objects wouldnt appear again and again in
fps's. They should make an algorithm which generates objects
with subtle randomisation on colour, shape and bump map.
maybe.

The (lithtec?) 3d engine gives me great hope of what could
be achieved with it in the future.

I believe a new set of missions is in the making.

nice idea about the algorithms, but that would surely grind
any computer to a complete halt.

and yes, the add-on will appear autumn 2006.

I definately did too. that was one of my biggest gripes with
the game... too many repeated textures and settings. even
the brief areas you could see large stretches outside looked
quite fake as well. I think the combat was really the only
saving grace, but even then there were too many repeated
enemies... I was hoping for some more resident evil type
stuff, like crazy mutants and maybe even zombies. but alas,
it was not to be. :(
