Phobiazero and Premium Memberships

Well seeing as we all love this site. I was thinking maybe
you (Phobiazero) should reduce the reward for donating $10
to the board to something more like 6 months premium
membership (thus we would have to pay $20 for a year¡¦s
membership), thus taking off some of the financial burden
and perhaps putting XLT on the road to a profitable website.
It makes financial sense; Xltronic.com isn¡¦t a charity;
and I am sure most of the current premium members
wouldn¡¦t mind paying twice in the year (I wouldn¡¦t),
and because you would have twice the income you can in turn
make XLT even better for every one
else¡K¡K.¡K¡K.especially the premium members ƒº.

Or perhaps you could create a sort of reward system where
you effectively buy (ugly word)¡K..hmm¡K. contribute
sufficiently to earn the various ¡§rights¡¨. For
example:

$10 earns you picture posting abilities for a year.
$15 dollars earns you the pic posting plus a personal file
ie blog.
Etc.

Well that¡¦s my two cents worth, feel free to slap me with
a witty yet blunt reply, I¡¦m already expecting it from
qrter and dog_bech and giginger and¡K¡K.the list is
endless.

I wouldn't mind, but I personally probably wouldn't be able
to pay any more than once a year (or less) the way it is
now, but of course, if people can and want to pay, they
should be allowed to.

$10 is reasonable.
Some of us pay more than that because we want to and I know
of 1 member who pays a certain amount every month. The past
few months Phob has had the hosting paid and I think that's
great. I hope it continues on every month.

I don't see why there should be an increase in the cost
though. Just seems stupid really.

sounds pretty draconian Xeron.

If people wish to donate more they can, no point forcing
people. Just because you're happy to and can afford it
doesn't mean everyone else can.

Donate more yourself and stop being totalitarian.

$100 per month are enough.

i think all this premium membership thing is negative. it
makes money-based differences between users. some
merchandising would be a better thing imo (that said i have
no idea if it would bring enough money). was it tried
already?

Oh don't be absurd. The site costs money to maintain, it's
not a commercial enterprise, it survives on the goodwill of
the owner and the members. You're not forced to pay to use
it, but those who appreciate the board like to contribute to
keep it going, and donations are the simplest and most
effective form of doing that.

As for rivalry, I think it probably only grates when someone
uses the board a lot, doesn't add much of value to the board
just witless AND hasn't donated (I'm not talking about
anyone specifically here).

I mean, it's not my site, this is just my view from afar.

the site costs money.

phobia can't pay for it all himself.

phobia asks for contributions and as a sign of goodwill
offers a few small features for the people that do decide to
give some money - perhaps as an incentive, perhaps as a
small form of thanks.

phobia already is busy setting up merchandise, besides the
premium membership thing.

I did, what money based differences? Do you mean if you
simply cannot pay then you're denied Premium features?

As for merchandise, I don't think it would sustain the site,
I think it's ok for one-off things like the slipmats, nice
idea, but for relying on that to keep the site going I don't
believe, at this stage, is a viable option.

You're all looking at it from the point of view that the
period of "premium membership" is an unchangable constant
ie.1 year. I'm merely looking at it from the other angle,
$10 would get you half a year's membership. If you can't or
don't want to pay and extra $10 dollars for the rest of the
year then you don't have to. Things would stay as they are
ie. that is $10 dollars is the constant (only the reward
would be less).

Also this would placate yann_g's post as for half of the
year (after reading the majority of the replies in this
thread) there would be less premium members at any one
time.

And people who say "people should only have to donate only
if they want to" haven't read my initial post, people can
still remain non-premium members for free in the XLT i'm
advocating.

Also whoever said XLT isn't about money, well it isn't a
charity either. Lets say for instance the price of up-keep
increases astronomically then it's bye bye XLT. If we paid a
little extra there would be scope for phobiazero to create a
sort of XLT contingency fund, for when times are hard.

well.. with not even the premium members posting pics of any
relevance or even funniness in most cases, how do you think
it'd look with everyone posting pics? we'd quite quickly
deplete the internets picture reserves.

I think you're getting to worked up, I'm sure if it was
sombody like qrter advocating this you'd just either keep
quiet or post refined comments (not big out of context
outbursts).

In answer to your question, LOOK! AT YOUR SCREEN for God's
sake. Xlt is changing (for the better), improvements cost
money. You would be shot for suggesting a stagnation in the
modernising British economy, the world of finance is like a
ladder, you want to earn more you have to spend more. You
want a nicer apartment you have to pay more. A better XLT
would thus need more funding.

Hey you mean the best. Thats a good thing but i dont think
it would be a helpful idea.

The reason for the ads is because not enough people were
donating. To keep things as they are you are expecting
members to donate twice as much for what they already get.

That seems flawed to me. If they already didnt donate enough
what makes you think they are going to double it all of a
sudden?

Lets play devils advocate here and no disrespect to anyone
here.

This site was supposed to be done in aug 02 if my memory
serves correctly. Since then we have a lazy link, pic
posting, more favs and that thing on the right over
there.... and radio.

Aside from this board what board charges you to post
pictures? $20 a year to post pics or in your equation it
would be $30. I dont know.... that doesnt seem worth it.

I cant donate. No bank account = no paypal. I cant get a
bank account for 13-14 years. That leaves me SOL.

And what about these ads? if i click my five a day what does
it matter? It doesnt renew or go towards my account. I think
it should there should be some way to credit that.

I dont know these are just my thoughts as selfish as they
are.

:)
