OH COME ON.. musically nirvana was nothing, it was the
circumstances around them that made them big.

yeah well, we can't all like same music.

it has nothing to do with the "like" term.

we definitely need someone to come along and break the mold.
i can't even listen to radio anymore - most of the rock is
so bad and according to formula that it literally causes me
physical pain to listen to it.

i'm not sure we'll ever have another revolution in rock -
mainly because there's so many genres and subgenres now that
they have all become autonomous of one another.

frank black said it best, "it's easy to become famous these
days." but staying famous, much less being REVOLUTIONARY,
that's a whole other ball of wax entirely.

I love nirvana... but we dont need another nirvana or
anything similar... we need to wait and enjoy what future
brings us, unless us ourselfs start doing the new revolution
(those who make music)

there is always a new turn

i agree with cuntychuck, nirvana didn't break any mold or
strike any new ground, they assumed a style and even had to
go to court and pay a settlement for ripping off another
artist. the mark they made was a consequence of their
commercial success, not their innovation.

that said, i think they were good at what they did,
rudimentary lofi pop rock with expensive production.

i'd rather i didn't have an opinion about this, but what's
done is done i suppose...

the last thing the world needs is more rock music.

who would be interested.

i'm interested, if we can call the band "staz and the razzle
dazz" and do a mix of glam rock and the teletubbies.

Sounds brilliant. I have a low budget microphone just aching
to be used. We'll probably need more than two members,
though.

Well I can sing and dance and play some merry melodies.
Would be cool with a real drummer though. Wouldn't even have
to be very good.

that claims most of the octaves. but more importantly, i'm
very handsome and photogenic. we can't lose!

there's probably four or five other people who are soiling

you can borrow staz's place for entertaining purposes.

thanks for asking. i'm not too big on rock music these
days, but i liked interpol's first album quite a lot. i've
been known to enjoy some super furry animals, especially
their first album, but it's nearly ten years since that came
out. i haven't heard the most recent weezer, but i liked
the first, third and fourth albums here and there.

my favorite rock album is probably "mouth by mouth" by his
name is alive, although "stars on esp" by the same band
would give it a run for its money. i think "everything's
alright forever" by the boo radleys is great. i'm sure
there's a lot that i don't immediately recall.

i like pink floyd when they were piloted by syd barrett.
and the dark side of the moon.

i like the first boston album.

i like the first five or so ramones albums.

i like a lot of odds and ends, like "walk don't run" by the
ventures. or "the tra la la song" by the banana splits.

my tastes are idiosyncratic and should not be trusted,
mostly.

"tape head opening" and "pressure pad" would be great names
for the a-side, and the b-side, respectively!

for me there was though. bands like Alice in Chains,
Pearljam, Fishbone, RHCP, Primus... successful and popular
bands had very distinct styles. nowadays there's more
cloning going on. now whenever i turn on the radio it's
clone after clone playing soulless noise. the vocal style
that Alice in Chains' frontman originated is now copied by
many.

Even if Nirvana wasn't the greatest thing, they are better
than most bands that reached their level of popularity.
They wrote music about something, even though much of it
seemed to be about being angsty.
I guess the problem now, is that the world is getting
gradually more fucked up and it's not being represented at
all in music, or at least not in a non-annoying or
heavy-handed way. There seems to be little music left that
has any sort of relevance to anything other than mindlessly
feeling good.. It's all mindless dancey popgarbage or
throwback feel-good garage rock derivative shit, and the
stuff with a meaning at the forefront is hushed by that
bombartment. I'm not saying that that sort of stuff isn't
to be enjoyed by anyone, ever. It just gets sickening.
There's only so much candy you can stomach.
The whole problem is that, now more than ever, if anyone has
their music heard by the masses through the music industry
and the intended meaning of their music is to point of the
bad of society or show some sort of higher regard for
humanity than most, they will likely be labelled as
hypocrites. I don't think Nirvana had that sort of message
in their music, but their whole aspect of sounding or acting
'underground' while being mainstream seemed to show that
they were trying to expand popular music to include
something more heartfelt and less of an industry-puppet
sorta thing. I guess they became a sort of antipuppet
puppet in the process and sort of collapsed upon this
realization.

r40f, i was definitelly thinking avantgarde oriented.
because i'd think you need some knowledge for non avantgarde
music and i don't have any :)

anyway, i was listening to nirvana again last night and it
makes me wonder why no one makes that sort of rock music
anymore..i wish the late 80's would repeat all over again.
that was some ace time music wise!

Not the same sort of music though is it? I always thought
Cobain could structure songs well but compared to other
bands of their ilk at the time they were lacking, and they
sound positively quaint these days. Boston of the 90's

they had the misfortune of being signed to a big label. they
were doing fantastic music before that, much less
polished..also they sounded way better live..you don't see
many rock bands experimenting that much..not sure what you
meant with boston reference.
