PSP music software?

Hi Folks,

Anyone know of any PSP homebrew software for music creation?
I've spent ages looking, but given the search terms either
get Lexicon PSP stuff for the PC/mac (VST instruments) or
media/mod players.

Any actual trackers/drum machines etc. available yet or any
work in progress that people are aware of?

why would you want to make music on a psp?

i would imagine anysoftware made for it would be catering
for the more casual approach of the music production
software, and you'd end up using the equivalent of dance
ejay

I've recently got a PSP. Lovely console...

All I have for it is Wipeout Pure and lots of random images
and Mp3s on a 512 mb memory card, but they've been
entertaining enough.

My DS is rarely used these days. I'd really like to be able
to make music on the move with the PSP; it'd be easy to drag
about with me then the laptop.

I'm sure the online community could come up with some
interesting new programes, or emulators. I could see myself
using it to do simple sound-editing tasks to destroy bordem
while not at the PC...With a decent sized memory card and
some raw sounds, you could create a set of samples on the
PSP that could be later transfered via USB to the computer.

I'd agree that most official music-creation things would be
a waste of time, along the lines of dance ejay or something.

just wait till ocarina of time gets re-released on ds and
make some songs with the ocarina!

Didn't hear about this. :-)

May well re-kindle my interest in the console. I liked Wario
Ware (made for a very enjoyable drunk plane journey to
California) and Yoshi DS.

why would you want to make music on a psp?

The only music capable laptop I currently own is an old G3
powerbook with supercollider. The battery is shagged on it,
so it's not exactly portable.

Even once I get my PC laptop (shortly) there will be
situations where a laptop will be too bulky to carry,
whereas a PSP can go in my pocket.

i would imagine anysoftware made for it would be catering

for the more casual approach of the music production
software, and you'd end up using the equivalent of dance

Yep, I don't hold much hope for official ones, as you say
it's likely to be an ejay-alike. However, given the existing
PC linkup, there may well be greater support for your own
samples etc. than there traditionally has been on the
official console based music proggies.

I was hoping there'd be a homebrew tracker/port of an old
one (I'm still bitter there was never a good one for the
GBA).

An obliging pro has been in touch and I've just been pointed
towards:

LAZY_PSP DRUM MACHINE AND BASSLINE EMU

Particularly as it looks like a doddle to make your own drum
kits for it...

Well, I have a 2.0 updated PSP (for the internet browser and
other extra features) so how will they get around that? I
suppose I could downgrade to version 1.5.

that's what you could do.

but each time a new game comes out, it'll force you to
upgrade to the newest firmware.

you bought the thing to play games on, right?

Exactly. That is what Nintendo wants. GAME ONLY.

You can retrograde to 1.5 from 2. At the moment, people are
upgrading from 1.51/1.52 to 2, then going back to 1.5 to
play homebrew etc. as aside from web browsing there's little
extra it offers. Personally I'll take emulators over web
browsing, though of course, after shelling out the best part
of £200 for the damned thing, I should be able to do both.

Hopefully, sony will eventually realise that they're losing
game sales through their gay locked firmware (eg I'm not the
only person who won't buy a game that requires v2 firmware
until someone cracks it to let me play emulators and
homebrew on it) and leave it alone.

It requires a reasonable level of technical ability to
pirate games on it (compared to say, PSone) and the idea
that sales will take a big dent due to piracy is simply
paranoia. Sure, some people will pirate some games, but I
doubt the majority of people owning a PSP will, by any
means.

Qrter: you bought the thing to play games on, right?

Nope! Believe it or not, I bought it mainly for videos, mp3s
and emulators (yes I know they're games, but they aren't
official). Sure, the games are a nice bonus, especially the
multiplayer. If it sounds far fetched, check out the gp32...
a hell of a lot of people with them don't own any proper
games at all!

Yeah, I use it for a variety of things. There's lots of
random Mp3s and images on there, and if I get bored
listening to stuff or staring at images, Wipeout Pure is in
the drive to play-that's been entertaining enough for a
while.

It's quite surreal having PS2-level graphics in the palm of
your hand!

Incredible! It should be exactly the opposite :)

Yep, Wipeout pure is my only game too. I'll probably get
liberty city stories, but I'm not going to treat it like a
normal console and buy lots of games for it.

i'm not sure if making music on a psp would be my thing...
unless i could somehow get my tone generator onto it.

For any naysayers who think homebrew is a load of
guff/nothing more than an excuse used by pirates. I emailed
this link to a mate who had a couple of dead
pixels near the middle of his screen and lo and behold, his
PSP is healed. Praise the Lord!

I had 4 dead pixels, now the problem is fixed because I gave
my psp back where I bought it. They changed my old psp with
a new one.

They'll take it back if you have 3/4+ dead pixels (depends
on the place). Hardly anywhere will exchange one that has
1/2 dead pixels (which is still enough to be annoying) and
indeed the manual says it's normal and doesn't justify
returning it. I'm glad you've got one, what game(s) have you
got?

Back to homebrew music software, I got PSP Kick and PSP
Rhythm working on it today. I like the swing and feel of the
rhythm in PSP Rhythm best, but the TR-707/floops style
display style in PSP Kick makes it easier to use. PSP Kick
also has better export features and easier support for your
own sound sets etc.

I'd say 'Kick' is best for IDM style stuff whereas 'Rhythm'
is more like a classic drum machine and good in hip hop
etc.

I've yet to try the bassline program, but I intend to...

Oh yes, I forgot to mention that if you get into homebrew,
the 32mb card is pitiful (I've already had to delete a
couple of Wipeout extras to free up space). A 2gb card shall
be mine once funds become available.

weird. i just woke up from having a dream about making music
on a psp.

Yep, it depends on the place but I know that store from
ages, the shopkeepers know me very well, because I usually
purchase all my videogames there, they are very kind with
everyone anyway, in fact I suggested it to many friends of
mine.

On my PSP so far I have Medievil resurrection, I really like
the two episodes on ps1 so I decided to buy it. In this game
there is also the possibility to play to Wipeout pure
(demo).

32 MB are really little, I used to put into my PSP some
music and photos, I had to remove them if I wanted to save
my medievil. I think I need to buy a big memory, but it
costs much, like 200 € for 1 GB : /

By the way here another screenshot of medievil, anyway If
you liked the two episodes on ps1 like me I would recommend
this one too.

Yes, I'll probably get liberty city stories for it and
possibly burnout legends, but I'm not planning on buying
lots of games for it (although I will be staying away the
evening with work a lot more so if I end up playing the PSP
a lot, I probably will buy a few more games).

Chaosmachine: No need to dream, friend: With PSP Rhythm your
dreams can become reality!

As you can probably tell from this thread, my PSP is now
ready for homebrew, so let me know once beta testing for the
icarus project commences. Cheers.
