i don't know much about jazz (only the ones everyone knows) and i don't really know what "ethno" means... but as for folk, Elliott Smith is great if you haven't heard him yet. i also made a topic about a french folk/post-rock band called Hitchcockgohome a few days ago in case you haven't seen it : )
...apart from that, have you heard some music from Boris and/or The Young Gods and/or Rachel's already?

I was just about to recommend them. But I prefer their CD "People's Spring". And yes, the lyrics are very naughty, mostly about fucking in the hay with Matthew or getting beaten by your own mother for not working hard enough in the barn.
And as for jazz, I'm gonna once again recommend Robotobibok, preferebly album "Instytut las"

Ah Matteusz (sp) such a great song :) My girlfriend performed it with a couple of her classmates as part of her graduation.
I was wondering what their status is in Poland, are they popular? Top 40 material?
They were very dancy live, I recommend them to everyone here.

You might like nlf3 trio goran, they're kind of semi-improv, jazz-tinged, instrumental psych-rock if that doesn't sound too silly. There's some mp3s to download if you click on the album covers.

You, you raised an interesting problem, Warsaw Village Band is not very popular here, rather Top 200 material. The same with The Cracow Klezmer Band. I mean, all of my friends dig both of the bands, but the attitude of an avarage consumer is more or less like this: We have out VIVAs and MTVs, we know what the world listens to now is 50 cent and we cannot let our peers from the west think they are superior. Especially that that fucking folk or something is music for the rednecks, right?
So everybody listens to the same radio shit. Even Eurovision is still popular here.
Mateusz is spelled with one "t" and it's my real name, so I like that song too. It's not so easy to perform I guess, kudos to your gf.

Only acceptable. Sky Valley is the greatest
Tolstoyed: The last jazz album that raelly had some impact on me was this thing:
Muzyka\jazz\mikołaj trzaska\(2004) danziger strassenmusik\
Get it from me on slsk. Username is the same as here.
It's basicly free-jazz but very very far away from your usuall Brotzmann style. It's subtle and nostalgic. It has a slowed down version of Lonely Woman by Ornette Coleman, so you know what you can expect.

if i name bands, then i have to name records too, since almost every good band has made several terrible records.
however, i heartily recommend
"standing up straight" and "the legendary wolfgang press and other tall stories" by the wolfgang press.
now i'm off to rock'n roll fantasy camp.

and for god's sake, pharoah sanders. timeless afrotinted jazz that moves from sweet and sublime to explosive and chaotic.
"thembi" "black unity" (it's one 37 minute jam) "izipho zam" (though i'd skip the vocal track)
*signs up for adult contemporary fantasy camp*
