Ok, maybe I'm missing something obvious, but anyhoo; say I
use another program to alter a whole bunch of the ID3 tags &
filenames of mp3s that I have in my iTunes Library, is there
any way to force iTunes to update the library without having
to remove & add folders back manually? Like, where's the
button to make iTunes rescan the folders that i've added to
the library?

(after this question is answered you can fill this thread
with glorious tips that will cause me to get more enjoyment
out of iTunes.)

I din't know, I normally delete everything in the itunes
library and then get it to rescan. Is that.. vaguely, in
the... ballpark?

Oh no, sorry, I just read your thread properly. "without
having
to remove & add folders back manually?
" Sorry. I've
wasted yours, and anyone else who might read this thread's
time

that's exactly it!

it's what i've been doing for the last week or so (that's
how long i've been using the program), but it just seems
like a back-assward way of handling it.

i mean, is it so out of the ordinary that people might
modify their files in a program other than itunes that they
wouldn't think to include an update library
button?

the reason i ask is, i'm trying to get into the habit of
rating the tracks as i listen to them on my ipod, and
doesn't removing a file from the library manually break the
ability for the ipod to sync its rating/last played data
with the files that are on your local machine's hard disk
(read: itunes library)? if so, that kinda sucks.

It is indeed the shittiness. I use iTunes at work and
removing/re-adding appears to be the only way to do it.
Also with new iTunes 5 I've discovered that if you turn off
the radio in general option your network sharing capability
is disabled. Arseholes.

that is iTarded as hell.

Ok, so now the question becomes, is this a dealbreaker, or
is iTunes still worth using?

If not, what's better?

(i am borderline infuriated that the apple usability zen
masters would overlook this functionality)

The only, and I mean only reason I use it is to share
my stuff and listed to other peoples shared stuff on the
network at work. The hours of entertainment I imagine I
could provide with hundreds of Goon Show episodes and the
365 days project cheers me no end. plus I know the boss can
see them so I try to make sure there's some files in there
with very very rude titles.

damn.

it (itunes) just seems like a fairly handy way of organizing
my music collection. i mean, i keep a rigorously structured
filesystem, and i don't let itunes touch that, but still it
seems more efficient to use itunes as a front-end to my mp3s
than windows explorer.

right?

I find it pretty shitty. It seems to be beyond its
capabilities to sort the list by track within album within
artist.

I've about had it with mp3/music database programs. I'll
probably end up writing my own. Not done that since my
polytechnic days when I was learning Pascal. *nostalgia*

i really wanted a mac zealot to come in here and show me
that not only could itunes do what i wanted but that it
could do it better than i had imagined possible and it could
also do a myriad of other things that i had never thought
were within the scope of reality.

i still have faith that it will happen.

Why would you use another program to update your tags when
iTunes can do it?

Ok, I think I found a way to update the iTunes library
without removing/re-adding folders. Although, i haven't
tested it thouroughly yet.

- Import your mp3 folders
- Change ID3 tags in external program
- Select the newly altered files in iTunes
- Right-Click > Get Info > Click "Ok" (do not change
anything)

This seems to work for the artist, genre, album, and title
tags, and on multiple files... let me know if you find out
that it isn't working for something or another.

Oh, and when you click "Get Info" it will show the tags
as they are in iTunes even if you've changed them
in a 3rd party program... but, when you click "Ok" they
should update.

this thread shows basicly why i've only used iTunes for 5
minutes and started using foobar...

offline epohs from )C: on 2005-09-27 07:31 [#01734926]

Seems like I used foobar for about 53 seconds back in 2001
and wasn't too impressed.

What are its strengths over iTunes, Fah? Sell me on it.

foobar is a load of hassle. fuck foobar.

fuck itunes too. It's only good to transport stuff to my
iPod.

Fuck taht lack of library updating.

Yahbut, I think if I'm able to trick iTurds into updating
it's library then it'll probably meet all of my needs pretty
well.

I just want a better way to organize and find my music than
in one huge alphabetical list (winamp), or having to
navigate to each individual folder in windows exploder.

The Winamp Library is good, mainly because of the auto
update, but the iTunes interface is great for doing mass
edits. I just wish it would autoupdate. You lose all your
playcounts etc when you delete tracks etc. FUCKING FAGGOTS!

Yeah, you're right. Also, i don't think my method will work
if the filename is changed, or if new files are added to
folders.

Jesus, you'd think by version 5 they'd have this basic
functionality.

It's exactly that, basic function-fucking-ality. I'm sure
it's something that's been mentioned before. It's such a
retarded way of doing things. If I had any coding know how
I'd do my own database type wotsit to do this for me. I
can't code a thing so I won't.
