So, here it is, my final project in synthesis at Berklee.
I'm now officially done with the synth major, and now its
just one more year of composition classes.

Anywho, for the final project, we get to decide what we want
to do, and then we work with a teacher (getting advice,
feedback etc).

I decided to do a 3 movement composition (its
ambient/soundcollage/minimalistic), which would be made
entirely from sounds that I designed from scratch, either
using synths, or by recording sounds and manipulating them.
I also constructed my own scale for harmonic and melodic
material.

Anyways, I worked on this since mid may, till mid august,
putting in at least 20 hours a week on it. Its by far the
longest, and most focused/detailed/etc piece I've ever
done.

It's 19 mins and 11 seconds, and although it is in 3 parts,
its meant to be listened to all the way through...

I hope you enjoy it...

Movement One: 0:00-4:50
Movement Two: 4:50-11:49
Movement Three: 11:49-19:11

Pyractomena Borealis (All 3 movements)

i'm 2 minutes into this track and its one of the best
fucking things i've heard on this board. you made all these
noises yourself? because there are a lot of lot of them...

the noise that comes in at 4:50 is very disconcerting after
all that ambience, but the ambient popping noises that come
in later give the noise some personality. almost as if it is
rhythmic but not.

thanks man! :-D

yeah, I made all the sounds from scratch. My own synth
patches, my own granular sampler I made in reaktor, and lots
of recorded sounds (from objects in my room) all cut up and
effected.

well, I hope you enjoy the rest of the piece!

movement one overall: lots of good timbre, which has always
been a strong point of yours. it is also not too terribly
repetitive, but not lacking in progression either. so far,
i'm insanely jealous that i couldn't write this.

movement two: the string synths around 6:50 are fucking
GREAT, especially after the noisy bits that bring in this
movement. They sort of remind me of Greame Revell (dun think
i spelled that right)

with the texture under those string synths, it reminds me of
something angelo badalamenti would have done for lynch, yet
i could imagine it as the soundtrack for a dario argento
flick, or some other old foreign slasher psychothriller.

good electronoise and vibesynth structures near the end of
movement two - the balance between the timbre and ambient
melodies sound helix-like in this track, yet one never seems
to surpass the other one too far, the balance of the overall
composition is solid as well.

movement three: a nice and wonderfully slow, drawing start,
it reminds me of looking at stars out in the countryside,
with only the wind in your ears in the spring. then those
vibes and electro noises come in and it gets even better.
the melody here is the best in the entire track so far,
which is fitting, because i can feel the track's climax
coming, very slowly but very surely.

marvelous psuedo-choral synths that come in around 16:00 or
so. there are a lot of channels that contrast and compliment
one another throughout this track, creating a sort of
unified variety.

smooth clean fade around 17:10 is well-executed. this
movement winds down nicely, in expert form. and those
subtle, barely-there ghastly synths at the end are icing on
this sweet sweet cake of a track.

all in all, i can say no wrong about this. well done, sir.
if there is ANY justice in this world, you should ace that
class. :)

Wow this was pretty much a part time job for a few months
wasn't it? Well it's downloading now.

Well I listened up until 7:22 -- forgive me for not
listening to the whole thing. I know you intended for it all
to be taken in together, and given the amount of work you
said you put into it, the last thing I want to do is give it
just a passing listen. However given that it is 3 in the
morning here and I have to get up early, I have to cut it
off at this point. I apologize if my opinion of it seems too
quickly formed, I do not want to take your piece lightly.

Let me first say that I am not very keen on ambient pieces
or sound collage or noise. I hear a lot of noodly, noisey
shit on this message board and so I formed a kind of bias
against the piece upon reading your description. However
after just a couple minutes of listening I realized that
it's levels above the other stuff I've heard here. The noise
around 4:00 was produced in such a way that it sounded soft
and very pleasing to the ear, which turned into a softer
reproduction of the introduction sequence (which was a good
way to enter the second movement). The way in which the
noise was employed was very good. Nothing too blatant,
nothing too abrupt, right on target.

I skipped to 14:00 just now after deciding I wanted to hear
more (despite a little sleep deprivation) and was rewarded.
This feels genuinely moving and emotional. I really enjoy
the acidy synth that pulses toward the end of each measure.
This is great! It is enchanting. Beautiful electronic
music.

Well now I'm really going to sleep. Your vast efforts really
show on this, man. 14:55 gives me chills (you know the hair
raising thing). The first time that synth comes in! Oooh, I
love it. Congratulations, this is really really fine work,
even though I skipped the second movement. I will listen to
it tomorrow.

Hey Zeus I havent see you in ages. How r ya doing? Well
think is a stupid question because you only get better,
musically speaking. I've been a fan of your music for like 2
years now. I just love your approach to electroacoustic
music. Everything is always original and also very good imho
:) I think you are going to be the next big thing in the
USA, they need someone as original and good as you Zeus, big
thumbs up for you and all your projects. Wich I have heard
some of the projects you have on your webpage, please, post
a link here, I lost my favorites when changing from PC to
Apple. Keep up the good job you are always known of.

*currently listening*

I am just going to journal my thoughts as the track
progresses.

I was completely surprised by the first :40 I was expecting
something way way different. Not that this is a bad thing.
It worked well as an attention getter. Around the 1:22 mark
was along the lines i was excepting (especially for the
opening)

Really noticed that it picked up quite nicely around the 3
minute mark and felt like it should be in a movie or
something. The quality of the sound is real good. Everything
comes across as chrisp and nice and polished (IMO)

The 4 minute mark feels like a slow scaled down version of
Telefon Tele aviv's older material with the little sounds
that produce a life to the atmosphere of the track.

Around the 7:12 mark i noticed the change of pace and it was
right on time in my opinion. That last section wasnt too
drawn out or too short.... it worked pretty well i must
admit!

Either my computer is retarded or it is completely silent @
12:00 - 12:31..... oh there it is you tricky guy you. I
thought something went wrong. Interesting use of the
quietness. I wasnt expecting that either. I think its good
to use that area as a little break to kind of "cleanse the
pallet" so to speak.

This new movement is really great. Reminds me of winter and
the first homealone movie. haha! Thats not a bad thing. I
guess it makes me picture Christmas making this the first
electronic song to remind me of a holiday. +5 coolness
points for you!

(running out of room will be continued)

Sounds real real good @15!!!

The more time goes by the more i love this last movement
circa 15:45..... completely perfect christmas style. I like
all the little tiny effects once again. Really brings the
whole thing together. Kind of like a living organism! :D

Around 18:23 now. Went quiet again so i turned up the
speakers. I like those little effects and how this dwindled
down nearing the end.

For me to give a 1-10 scale rating would be hard because
this track is so big so i will break it down

Movement One: 0:00-4:50: Good intro and a nice place
to get started in this track. Overll it turned out to be
what i was expecting and wanted to hear from you 8/10

Movement Two: 4:50-11:49: I feel that this was more
diverse for some reason. As if this was the harder one to
create. I like the atmoshpere that was provided. 8.9/10

Movement Three: 11:49-19:11: You became the first
artist to remind me of a holiday. The sound quality was the
highest in this movement in my imagination and the overall
sounds chosen fit so well! 9.7/10

Overall this was 19:11 well spent! Thanks for sharing! :)

hey, thanks for the indepth response! its nice to know
people are really listening!

hahah, sweet, I made you think of Christmas! It wasnt my
intention, but thats cool! Its always interesting to see how
people interpret music, when its instrumental. Its actually
why I dont like giving very clear track titles, that
immediatly put the images in your head. I came up with this
title after I wrote the entire thing, and got my own images
in my head.

Thanks for checking it out man! (I know 20 mins is a hard
thing to sell sometimes!)

its the scientific name for "fireflies" or "lightning bugs"

I dont write music, with a particular thing in mind... I
write freely, and when Im finished, I listen several times
and come up with a name from the images I myself get.

So I wasnt thinking of fireflies at the time... it was just
an after thought, but again, I dont want people to listen
with "fireflies" already in their mind, so I chose the
scientific term, so there would be a less immediate
connection.

The best thing is that the movements are distinct but ehy
compliment each other. I sometimes get carried away with
"the zone" when i make ambeint and it gets samey over time.
I prefer that but its not always well received.

In the back of my mind that is what i expected here but
thats not how it is at all. I could think of it like 3
seperate tracks off the same album jammed together. Works
real well. I will have to keep this on the hard drive for a
while
:)

I did write it in 3 parts... however I had a basic idea of
the general shape of things when I began.

I ended up abandoning it after the 1st movement though, and
I went off somewhere else with the second movement. The
third movement was basically what I had in mind from the
start, but it changed, due to the change in the second
part.

Even though each part is its own thing, I still think of it
as one large piece...

and I also HAD to write it in smaller sections, because the
amount of CPU I was using with all the plugins and audio
files was insane. Even freezing each track, it was too much
for my comp to handle. I have about 10-15 seperate logic
files. About 5-6 of those are sketch files. The rest are
breakdowns of various elements in a track. Id write certain
elements in one file, save it as audio, dump it into another
track, work more, save that as audio etc.

Then I took all the bounces and put them into a master file
for mixing it all together.

It was a pretty messy process actually
