I've just got a place to stay for next in a really nice
part of dublin, for a dirt-cheap price. I'll be sharing a
flat with some Algerian randomer. My attic room doesn't have
a door on it, understandably, which is fine, since he has
the downstairs and I have upstairs.

However, I had a bad thought last night. He had said that
it's definite that he'll be getting broadband in the gaff,
since he "sells a lot of stuff on ebay". Were he not
algerian, and a bit shifty-looking, I wouldn't be concerned,
but I suddenly thought last night - what if i come home one
day, and he's made off with my all my shit, my laptop, my
server (with my music, which is my life), my sound
system.... What can I do?

the relevance of the bedroom not having a door, by the way,
is that I therefore cannot lock my door when I go out in the
daytime.

The post sounds slightly racist, I'm not.. I'm just
concerned... I have nothing against the guy and I'm sure he
could very well be well sound and nothing will happen, but i
do have my reservations

seriously tho, i've lived in a sharehouse for 2 years now,
and some dodgy people have come and gone... thus far tho,
the worst thats happened is an implied late night molesting
which worried me enough... nothing has been stolen... apart
from coffee etc.. heh

i don't think the problem is that the guy uses ebay since
i've never seen an auction for "all the stuff in this guy's
room" before. i think the problem is that you don't have a
door.

no the problem is that he is algerian and algerians are
terrorists of the muslim flavor who sell peoples stuff on
ebay.

a door is a difficult one though.

it would have to be fitted horizontally.... i might make one
myself out of plywood. i dunno.

Actually, check his ebay rating...if he is selling loads of
shit like kidneys, livers etc. then worry.

set up a trip wire to the entrance of your room that
notifies you via text message whenever someone enters.

Backup your stuff and hide it somwhere. If, by that small
.0001% chance he IS evil, you don't want to lose your work
just because it's on your harddrive and you don't have any
backups. Rasec's plan is sound, too.

you need to divide your data into 2 categories: unique (like
photos, essays, drawings, designs, music by yourself, stuff
you won't be able to get back) and not unique (lol, can't
remember the proper word for it. data that you can get back
easily, i.e. music, well known software, games etc...)

once that's done i'm sure you'll be able to fit it all onto
a few cds or something

That's a lot of giggery you silly goose! Still, don't DVDs
hold like 15-20 gigs of data or something? I've got hundreds
of CD-Rs laying around (well not laying around, they're
actually meticulously arranged), haven't used DVD-Rs though
so I dunno, don't quote me on what I just said. It doesn't
seem like it would be THAT daunting, or maybe I'm wrong.

Don't you have any kind of backup for it or something
somewhere? Like a parallel hard drive or set of hard drives
something? I've got a stack of old saved hard drives I use
just in case hell breaks loose. But he'd steal any backup
harddrive, too! I can feel it, I don't trust this Albanian
bastard either. Or Armenian or whatever you said he was.

but even then - if you weren't living with a filthy thieving
foreigner, wouldn't you just be worried about losing 500Gb
of valuable data because you never back up? you know, what
with computers crashing, HDs spontaneously disintegrating,
that kind of thing.

4, I was close, it's not like I thought they held 1000 gigs
or something. Still, that's like 125 DVDs, which is nothing,
child's play. He won't find any buyers for THAT, lemme
tellya. And I find backing stuff up to be a very rewarding
and fun process.

if you create a makeshift door with a lock that might be
awkward. because he'll obviously ask why, and you'll be all
like i don't know. and it will be awkward. i think the
answer is- go to the european equilvalent of kmart and buy
some lockable storage to put all the important stuff in.
