eh.. I don`t actually know how to explain this.. they have
a story, but the main story is secondary in the film, in a
way... examples:
happiness of the katakuris
lost in translation
the life aquatic
kung-fu hustle

anyway, the question is: can anyone suggest movies that
are.. like that, if you understand what I mean..?

Did you trust your senses when you made this topic?

The answer is: "Every porn movie made"

yes, the topic didn`t smell funny, nor did it look like
there was something wrong with anything I did.

well, not sub-plot.. it`s just.. those movies up there all
made me laugh mostly because they weren`t really about
anything in particular, making all the small details
funny... bill murray has a knack for being in films like
this...

I`ll check the day the earth stood still.

rushmore.. hmm, I actually think I have that, but have never
seen it... thanks!

the royal tenenbaums is another film of this type... and
another bill murray film where he`s a spy who doesn`t know
he`s a spy, but rather thinks he`s on a television show or
something...

like, where the overall ambiance is the main character in
the film? the specifics of what is going on are less
important?

hmm, there has to be a name for that genre of film.

i saw lost in translation yesterday. it was very sub par.
the only good part was bill murray.

if i could find the rate the films you see thread, i'd give
it a 6/10

bill murray sure helps the film, yes, but the fact that it
isn`t really about anything helps too.

it definitely didn't come out as being about nothing. i took
it as follows...

it was about two people. scarlett whatevers character (she
was the worst part of the movie imo) just graduated college
and didn't really have an idea of what she was going to do.
this was mainly because of her husband, a photographer, who
with she travelled. the other person, obviously, is bill
murray. a popular actor (most likely no longer acting) who
was doing a commercial for whiskey solely for the money. he
had a bad relationship with his wife and children, and the
trip to tokyo only made it worse.

i just think it was trying to be artsy fartsy and didn't
pull it off well at all (and i like artsy fartsy when done
well)

scarlett johansonn's character really pissed me off. she was
in tokyo and just sat around the hotel room for the most
part. go out and see some things. do some things.

Try Wim Wenders' and old Jarmush's movies. Good choices
would be "Himmel uber Berlin" and "Permanent Vacation", the
second one beind a little bit boring though. I guess they
fall in that genre of yours.

i guess you fell asleep for the scenes of scarlett
johannsens character going out and seeing things by
herself...the temple and the garden for example. more
important, though, is the significance of her choice to
sequester herself in the hotel. it seems pretty pointless
to just dislike a character for not choosing as you would
choose. sometimes movies are about the lesser choices that
people make, i think...

alright, you, now go back and read the rest of my post!
touche!

y'know, they only had about a hundred minutes to show you
what happened in tokyo...but i suppose it would have been
cool if ninety minutes of that had been scarlett
johnannsen's character going to the movies and watching
"freddy got fingered" dubbed in japanese or something. her
reaction shots would have been priceless...

In addition to the other great films people have mentionned
- and judging by your criteria - I guess Napoleon Dynamite
is another film where the central plot really isn't that
important. Nothing dramatic really happens, it relies solely
on it's bizarre assortment of characters and a number of
amusing set pieces to carry it through.

solaris and 2001: a space oddyssey do have significant
storylines but you have to pay a lot of attention to them to
figure out what is going on. I'd say overall the atmosphere
and imagery is what counts most in these movies, as well as
your own interpretation of things.

i suck at trying to explain these things. anyway, both of
these movies are just excellent.

city of god?

offline QRDL from Poland on 2005-08-24 14:13 [#01705444]

OK, the perfect choice would be any Tarkovsky's or Sokurov's
movie. Especially Russian Ark by Sokurov. This is a really
hardcore meditative, mesmerizing movie with a simple plot
which is only an excuse to make you think and shed some
tears for the past. It's my favourite movie, cause it
started my adventure with the Artsy-Fartsy. If you dare to
watch it, try to get the 2CD RIP by vass. The others are
blurred and don't do the movie justice.

Wait a moment, we're talking about titles that are not
driven by plot, right? How the fuck would Shawshank or City
of God count? I hate Shawshank goddamn it!!!

offline QRDL from Poland on 2005-08-24 14:22 [#01705448]
Points: 2838 Status: Lurker

Ah, and if Russian Ark is too much, than I think Stalker by
Tarkovsky would do the trick. It's his most wordly widely
webly respected movie.

Wait a moment; ''they have a story, but the main story is
secondary in the film...''

in shawshank the story is about the inter-relationships and
emotions of those pent up in prison (various sub stories).
while the underlying twist isn't revealed until the end (the
main story), no?

in city of god, a true story (the main story), we see it
through the eyes of one character (sub story).

congratulations on demonstrating a distinct lack of a)
taste; b) tact, and c) reason.
