Been listening to this a fair bit recently. And though much
of it sounds dated now - it does so in a really good way.
Yet while there's a definite aspect of nostalgia when
listening to 808State, I can't help feeling there's a reason
these tracks still sound good now.
Then again - I do prefer the stripped-down acid sound of
Newbuild more than a lot of the glossy material on
here.
Cubik still rocks though.

They still sound good now because Graham Massey is a
fantastic musician, not a teenage chancer knocking out stuff
in his bedroom. Newbuild, Quadrastate, 90 and ex:el are
fantastic albums, with a breadth of scope that hasn't really
been repeated since.

As all electronic music gradually progresses towards
sounding like the musical equivalent of a dying laptop,
these albums will sound fresher and fresher, in my humble
opinion.

808 State live at Manchester G-Mex, 1991 - Best Gig Ever.

Shocking apart from Pacific. V.Good Live compaired to the
vinyl experience. Unlike most bands with the experience
being reversed.

love love love the State. were you at G-Mex? wow. so glad to
see they're getting the recognition they deserve. i'm a big
fan of Don Solaris. thats probably my favorite of theirs.
saw them once at USC last time they played LA like 2001 or
something. Graham is a great guy.

I was there at the G-MEX Gig, long time ago now but it
rocked! 808 State - 90 for me will always be one of the best
techno albums. It was thoroughly original at the time. I do
feel disappointed though with the direction 808 have gone.
Cubik and Cobra Bora are still solid tracks even now. Don
Solaris was awful I'm afraid, a big let down.

Don Solaris was the first i'd heard from them. that album
was just so organic and flowed so well, didn't care to much
for the guest vocals, but Bird, Kohoutek, the last 3
tracks....Joyrider, the song thats like driving through a
Brazilian festival parade at high speed in a jeep; all that
stuff is fantastic.

the greatest hits record is of course great. i prefer the
Pacific808:98 version to the original Pacific State, but
there is no disputing the ground that this song broke.

i like Gorgeous quite a bit. EX:EL...well everything thats
good on there is also on the 808:88:98 so i had it but i
really didn't need it, so i sold it. i had the UK 90 also
but i tossed that for the Utd. State 90 that had more
tracks. think Donkey Doctor was the one i liked on 90. i
came at 808state from '97 backward so thats my thinking.

Outpost Transmission is pretty cool. the UK version is much
better. think i had a bad taste in my mouth from the US one
that was missing a lot of good tracks.

you know what i think is cool about 808state is that their
stuff sounds like its going to be like cheesy festival
anthem stuff...but its cool somehow.

like in the way that Tom Hanks movies from the 80's are
cool. Money Pit cool.

since its out you probably can't go wrong with the album
we're talking about, the greatest hits called '808:88:98'.

Ones to buy:

Newbuild (1988) - Straight up 303/808 acid, among the best
there's ever been, certainly the best ever made outside of
Chicago.

90 (1990) - Electro, ambient, funk, proto-rave, and loads
more, an amazing mashup.

ex:el (1991) - One massive tune after another, takes the
themes on 90 and wraps them up in totally lush production.
Nephatiti is a MASTERPIECE. Bjork features on two tracks.

Don't bother with anything after ex:el. In 1990 - 1991, I
was like the world's most obsessive 808 fan, I had all their
records mounted on my wall and listened to their radio show
religiously. Gorgeous came out and I never listened to
anything they did again.

Also, you might want to check out the "Switzerland" spinoff
12" singles by Martin Price - "Pornography", "Inflight" and
"Switzerland". Pornography is 1991 breakbeat acid years
ahead of its time, and quite clearly influenced Aphex a
great deal. I have the 2-mix (LMG/LMGSM) 12" with the
cadbury's label which is particularly rare (800 limited),
and the original Eastern Bloc promo sheet to go with it.

Speaking of Aphex, where does Aphex draw his influences
from? I sent a demo to Rephlex once, then I hear tracks on
Druqks that are remarkably similar...

What album is that? Is it the one with the silver cover???
Or the blue cover with different versions of pacific state
on it. Anyway, bought them back in the day. still sound
good, but newbuild is the daddy.
