I was going to say that, yes, I am slightly pissed about all the nigger comments and jokes pop up occasionaly. I just wanted to show what that word means to me. As they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. |

i think it's really shit how some of you have been throwing around racist comments like it's ok. it's not ok. it may be "just a word" to you, but it's extremely offensive to others. and don't give me that shit about free speech and what a "nigger" is. obviously you can say the word, but don't expect people to love you for saying it. |

also, it's not as if black people are now on the same level as, for example, white people. in some way or other a lot of that is a consequence of the past - it is good to remember what happened in the past that helped create the current situation, to help to understand it. you know, that whole thing of the past helping us to understand the present. |

Nigger in its original context meant "ignorant fool". People dont like being coined terms such as "fag". But instead of saying nigger they actually said "fool" or something else it would be racist today. I dont know. I dont find anything really racist. i am not. I dont see the point in labeling people based on skin colors. I do use the word to show a difference in actions though as i explained in another thread. I dont know i think Edward Norton hit it on the head "Slavery ended 157 years ago. Move the fuck on" Why should anyone focus on the past? Its good to know history but we should focus on the now. Its like you dont see the jews making a big deal when we and if we call them jews and theyve been oppressed since like the dawn of time and shit. my point? although i understand the meaning behind that word i feel as though many various cultures have endured shit. One situation is not better or more significant then another. i dont know. |

SORRY i just wanted to make a joke -- the fact that the AFRICAN AMERICAN was bound to a wheelchair was also integral to the joke. "the nigger in the wheelchair". it's exhibiting ignorance at both ends of the sentence. a few people found it funny. i'm glad it made people laugh. none of these people are racist, i am certain, and I for one am certainly not a racist. I do also understand and recognise the connotations attached to this word -- and these were essential to the joke. the joke was about ignorance. "the nigger in the wheelchair". it's a completely ignorant and dickheaded thing to say, that's what made it funny. So I wrote it. And people found it funny. |

from another perspective, i think that in many ways western culture has strongly embraced many aspects of so-called "black culture." in so many ways, "black culture" is seen as a hallmark of cool. some african-americans historically defused the sting of the slur by appropriating the word for themselves, calling each other "nigger" within their own social circles. now as "black culture" has been so strongly embraced, many people who are not african-american feel more comfortable in using the word as african-americans might; not as a slur or an insult, but in the same way other people might say "dude" or "man," but with a hip, urban and slightly transgressive quality. i'm not saying it's right or wrong or that anyone has to like it, but honestly if an african-american calls someone who is not african-american "nigger" (and i swear it happens) , it would (in certain contexts) be a tremendous compliment. the word is also used very lightly in extremely popular television programs like chappelle's show. it's working it's way towards popular acceptance, and will probably end up completely divorced from its origin as a racial slur. |

Its hard for me to grasp this (with all due respect). I can understand if you or someone you know that is alive went through some sort of hate crime and you heard about it first hand or experienced it yourself. But its hard for me to think that something that is in the past can effect someone that didnt have to deal with the horrors that occured. and I said I don't think you have the same field of reference - do you have a word that has the same kind of very negative historical background that still echoes in modern society? this does not mean that everytime you hear that word you have to stand still and rethink the whole historic path of the word - the word gets ingrained with the historic knowledge. |
