Macs used to be used because they where completely solid and
reliable due to being a consistant hardware platform with a
custom operating system. However in recent years Windows
has became a solid platform and the power of your average PC
is more than sufficient to run and music making apps.
Apples are used now because they are trendy and some people
are just used to the platform. Like hanal says stick with a
PC laptop (I have also had nasty times with Vaio's though)

like lee said, macs were known for being more stable than
windows-based laptops, but now they are virtually even.

years ago, in the recording industry, many people used
cubase for their computer-based recording platform, but at
one stage the cubase software became very unstable and
producers began to move over to the more reliable, and
frequently updated (fixed) mac programs, such as logic -
which apple subsequently bought.

and i think it is true that macs have become 'trendy', with
their easily recognisable image. some of my lecturers are
constantly arguing over which is better pc or mac - but
really it's just a petty arguement, as the better one is the
one that is right for you.

that was my thought too!

i mean i have always heard people telling me about the
reliability of macs. but i mean for doing music they seem to
suck kinda.

for example ableton live - which works half that good on
macs...

Garageband, Sibelius, there is a lot of programs on the mac
that are superior to most music software out there.

My brother uses garage band an sibelius, i use fruity
loops5, hammerhead studio, acid music studio 5.

i don't know about trendy... but i am used to the platform
since i learned computer usage on a mac back in the day. but
"mylittlesister" makes the best point in this thread...
whatever works for you is cool.

apple owns emagic, who makes logic audio. you've probably
never seen logic past 5.5 because the mac versions are a lot
harder to crack. logic is an excellent environment.

logic is good, but they are cunts, releasing updates almost
every 6months [slight exaggeration], and then forcing
current users to pay £100+ for the updates.

you have to be kidding.. ofcourse macs are trendy. ipods are
trendy. anything Apple is trendy.

and they heavily market their products on being trendy
(hence overdesigning everything).

I'm not saying it's wrong they're trendy - that's trends for
you, can't control them - Apple has just been very handy in
cashing in on their supposed hipness.

i'm telling you from my point of view... i don't gush over
the newest mac computers and accesories... macs are what i
learned with so that is what i prefer... i don't buy it for
looks... sure everything i have is mac... i have 2 imacs, an
ibook, 2 ipods... and i'm about to buy a powerbook. that is
just what i preffer to use.

but i see how you may think it's trendy... you already
explained it with the marketing and the so called
"overdesigning".

but you assume everyone that buys macs are trendy... and
that is where you are wrong.

because you'll simply be happier using a mac. it's like the
difference between living in a nicely decorated house or a
mess, or the difference between a party with music you like
and one with music you don't.

as a person who is required to work on both macs and pcs,
ive come to realize that when pushed to their limits they
both fuckin suck. and as linux sucks even more than pc or
mac i refuse to use that crap. so in the end it comes down
to 4 things:

1) which is cheaper
2) which is easier to repair and/or purchase replacement
parts for
3) which is easier to get software for (legal or not)
4) Finally which looks better

well right off the bat, PCs take the first three with ease.
macs obviously look a hell of a lot better so naturally
people who make a living surrounded by the visual arts/
industrial arts or even art in general are going to be
willing to overlook the first 3 points. another thing is
that initially adobe only produced for apple, so eventually
when they began making software for PCs apple had already
ingrained themselves so deeply into the computer design
culture that PCs simply wouldnt be accepted.

Mac and PC differ when it comes to ergonimics. For me.
Apple is like using your left hand. PC is like using your
right hand. Assuming you are ambidextures, but kinda lean
to your right hand. Macs also feel cleaner cause you don't
(seemingly) have all this shit embedded in your system when
you install a program. (well, ok, OSX is a little like that)
ATTENTION! Is there a real uninstaller program for OSX, yet?
I stopped using mac when I had a lombard. I used Jaguar for
a bit.

just slowly become completely occupied with their own daft
little tasks

i use a mac all the time, though i used to have a pc. i
bought the mac (powerbook) for music production, but i soon
realised that i suck at it. but after using a mac for about
4 years now, there is no way i would go back to a pc. all
the pc bods that i know have shitloads of pop ups and stuff,
whereas my mac doesn't seem to get that stuff.

getting an imac g5 in a couple of weeks :)

macs are not virusproof, it is simply that the majority of
viruses are aimed at microsoft products/files/drivers/etc.

pc's can 'live' just as long as macs if you treat them
correctly, which includes how the hardware is treated, and
how the software is installed and organised.

you assume I assume that everyone who buys macs are trying
to be trendy - which is where you are wrong.

I never said anything like it.

I was saying that the products that Apple make are perceived
as being trendy and that Apple makes good use of this to
sell their products.

I'm not saying that this sellingpoint works on everyone.

macs are built to work. most pcs are built from components
made by a million different manufacturers which can cause
conflicts between the different parts. Your standard pc
could have been built by anybody. A mac is built by apple
and tested by apple so that all the parts work as they
should do.
