In anticipation of the release on Saturday, we might as well have a thread for it now. I'm looking forward to it, but unfortunately my Girlfriend has dibs on first-read (even though I paid for it!) so I won't actually get to read it until Monday at the earliest. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing how Rowling develops the storylines and if this book will continue the darkening of tone that has happened for the past two books.

I'm looking forward to it. Hope it's a bit less rambling than the fifth book, and more structured like GOF.

Oh shit, me too. JKR's like King in that the story just envelopes you. I hardly recognise it as "bad" writing as I'm just enjoying what's going on. I think for this one I'll abandon my customary SAW II listening and head down the beach with a quarter and some beers.

they only made the Children's book chart here in Britain because the first few Harry Potter books stayed at the top of the book chart (there was only one official one then) for so long, JK had many envious "adult-book" writers.

Yeah, the 5th one was suprisingly horrible. Not as good as the climactic events of the first four. Hopefully this 6th release from Rowling will be much more enjoyable.

Well, I drove my girlfriend 22 miles to Tesco to get our first copy -- I flicked through it (FOOL!) and found out something VERY VERY major which kind of blows. I won't give any of it away because I'm not a total cunt, but I felt like shouting it out to all the other people scampering out of the place with their copies.

Then why are you judging its fans - it's certainly an extremely detailed alternative society that Rowling has created, and why shouldn't the children [and even some adults] enjoy it so much that they feel like dressing up a little to celebrate its release? It's a way of identifying with it, so let them alone won't you?

the hardy boys were badly written, thinly plotted and didn't have multiple plot-lines developing over a series of books. They were also not very warm-hearted - I used to have a collection of them number 40-50 and I can safely say that the Harry Potter series is far superior to The HArdy Boys in every respect.

Obviously a franchise, I mean, a work of literature such as the Pooter series, tales concerning a public school boy wizard, who overcomes things such as being an orphan and wearing glasses, tales which transcend their fantasy grounding and address all manner of relevant issues such as, is the girl in the film too young to fancy, what a fucking shame Richard Harris will be remmebered by a load of fucking spunkwarts as the head wizard from the shit Poofter film and not for any of his other roles, is paganism acceptable, etc, appeals to people of all walks of life. All walks of life however walks of life limited to those that involve being a slack minded fucking cunt swipe who would hoorah any old claptrap as long as it was hyped to the fucking gills enough.

It's funny that so many people who hate the Harry Potter books either haven't read ANY, or have only read the 1st, which IS a children's book, yet they seem to know everything there is -- they go on about things which aren't actual about the books - the films and Emily Watson etc, or the shit that's spouted in America by some irrelevant Right Wing Christian groups, while the real fans are enjoying the books themselves.

it has always disgusted me how big things such as this always, always spawn ashameless parody. For examples, Pokemon spawned the even worse Digimon whilst the Crazy Frog has spawned 'Snappy das kleine Aligator' and dog_belch has spawned gay_dad.
it's terrible the downward spiral that this monotonous and repetitive world is hurtling down.

I went into a book shop today in town, to buy some proper books, including a translation of Alain-Fournier's classic "Le Grand Meaulnes" and the shopowner said to me "We have the last Harry Potter book in if you want", I said "I haven't read the first one so... ". You know, obviously I am a cunty for having not read it, like I haven't read much Jeffery Archer, Jilly Cooper, Tom Sharpe, Helen Fielding or Danielle Steele, but, somehow, I'll learn to live with my shame.

Well you're a tit, and have nothing to say and are acting just as Marlowe's mouthpiece, and Marlowe is the one hung up on being "intelligent" yet is blathering on about some over hyped children's McNovel. I'm the only voice of dissent, everyone else loves the gripping tale of a prepubescent struggling to come to terms with being in a public school, giving the loveless Robbie Coltrane another inexplicable movie role and some drama about fictional characters doing something tiresome, so just ignore me.
