does anyone like these? i had them recommended to me by
someone in work and i'm actually pretty impressed, i like
the singers voice and i don't normally like metal, i have
only listened to toxicity so far

they are very clever dudes, with an amazing breadth of
musicological influence. i can't get enough of the way
through which they syncretise slayer-style thrash together
with armenian folk melodies and other exciting genres.
that's why i'm all, like, strung out, waiting for them to
release new records. i could listen to them so much.

'nuff artists have gotten hip to the polymathical
recombination in music now. mr. bungle, for example, or for
a different take on it, secret chiefs 3... even some
artists that work exclusively in one genre often
"ironically" interpolate elements from popular music as
kitsch, or just because there are excellent ideas in every
genre.

all this is just to say that i wish s.o.a.d. would have
like, a billion more albums, like frank zappa or venetian
snares. the thing that makes zappa's catalogue durable to
me, is that he would do such heroical stylistic leaps from
each release to the next, making each of his records a new
and exciting, and eventually durable, artistic watershed,
without ever straying from his essential formula. if i had
more disposable income i would buy a new s.o.a.d. record
every week if one were available.

I love the first two albums and Steal this Album, haven't
heard the new one... lot of unflattering things being said
about it but I trust the people saying them. I think they're
really good, guess I should get off my butt and hear the new
one.

Thatne- great post, they definitely have a lot more going
for them artistically than most people think. They make me
smile, a lot of their songs are smartly crafted little
jagged thingies.

Ophecks, the thing that has turnt me offa them a little bit
is the sentimental daron-led songs that they seem to feature
more prominently now after their success with "chop suey!"
i think that since toxicity was #1 in the u.s.a. during the
week of 9/11/2001, they have been co-opted by their record
company into symbolising the feelings regarding that event.

w'hoops, what i meant to say was that the above is what i
think founds the criticism of mezmerize. i was more
comfortable with serj as the only mouthpiece. unlike belle
& sebastian, whom i love retrogressively throughout their
career, but whom i think benefit from the more democratic
songwriting stratagem they've been doing since the boy with
the arab strap. i love sarah martin's songs so much, man,
"waiting for the moon to rise" is just perfect for me
sometimes innit.

one more praise that i have for s.o.a.d. before i guess i'll
shut-up is that they are refreshingly agile in their
genre-transcending ecstatic explosivity. remember in the
early 1990s, for example lollapalooza rosters, the music was
kind of bloated from the influence of prog-rock being
clumsily combined with metal and punk, and got so thick and
muddy. i guess there was a point to it but like, you could
compare l7's "shitlist" to a snowball avalanching down an
incline (but never going very fast, lol), and s.o.a.d.'s
faster tunes to a guy doing handsprings for 2 minutes.

I'm definitely not fond of those ''sentimental'' songs. I
like them best when they've got their tongues firmly planted
in their cheeks. Not that I think their songs and views are
jokes, but they've got a certain charisma about them. They
can get a message across to me AND make a witty little ditty
at the same time.

I don't like Aerials.

where's pOgO? he's a fan of theirs.

the new album isn't great but Toxicity is an absolute
masterpiece, probably better than the self titled debut in
my opinon simply because the tunes are more memorable and
there's more diversity amongst them and no needless
swearing.

The first couple of albums were pretty decent. Not every
track a keep on the stereo but a fair majority. After that
though... shite.

They have just annouced that they will play in Vancouver in
September. Mars Volta are supporting, I like SOAD but I hope
that they pull out so The Mars Volta will have to play a
full set.

Tickets go on sale on Satuday, if you want to find me, I
will be standing in line outside ticket master. (no assasins
please)
