FUCK SHIT CUNT

No not that sort of language.. I'm talking about
multilingual threads.. They've been popping up recently, and
I, even as someone deeply interested in language, believe
people should refrain from posting in any language other
than English.

This isn't because I think English is superior to other
languages; it's that it's the primary language of the board.

However, when there's a thread, and someone starts writing
in another language to English, it completely obstructs the
flow of conversation in the thread. I myself find it
interesting, but annoying at the same time.

And before anyone jumps the gun and shouts at me for another
anti-tridenti rant -- this isn't one. It's not about
tridenti, regardless of the fact that most of these posts of
late are in Italian and are due to himself and Woofer (and
one or two other users with incredible bablefish skillz)
This is just about keeping the quality of threads high by
letting conversation flow..

I hear you brother, I do. I wouldn't say out and out nothing
other than English because this board does enjoy the
patronage of an international clientele, and that's one of
the reasons that makes it enjoyable. That said, when threads
are derailed by persistent toings and froings of grammatical
correction of another language, probably off topic in
nature, then that sort of thing could be done elsewhere.

It's all about consideration, gracias por su atencion.

i understand what you mean and also sympathise with you, but
when I "speak" in another language i'm usually directing a
personal comment or question to somebody.

In future i'll try to keep it to a minimum and i'll also do
a english translation underneath for when i do use another
language. :)

it's difficult for tridenti and to some extent woofer, as
they also want to increase their grasp of english. Wouldn't
it be better for the mb to have an increased quality of
english, i'm sorry but bablefish just doesn't cut it.

your just jealous, i bet that the fact your monolingual eats
you up inside.

If you were a little bit more perceptive you'd see that I
only speak in another language when i'm talking directly to
the person ie. 1:1. You'd also have seen that redrum finds
it sometimes interesting

As for me being arrogant, that's just a load of crap. If you
don't care Why make such a fuss, sort your lingual
insecurities before you spout that crap out to me again.

Maricon!

Points: 12878 Status: Addict | Followup to r40f: #01641038

hah. yeah but as i said, sincerely, this isn't about
tridenti..

it's about threads getting derailed.. and the thing is, they
never get back on the rails after 2 people have a mutual
italian-wankfest, and one other person complains once or
twice "erm can we please go back to english?"

it kills threads.

plus it means we get less of tridenti's unique english
literature, which i must say is often comedy GOLD...

offline Xeron from London (United Kingdom) on 2005-06-22 13:38 [#01641053]

its really just Bablefish or Google Translator, nothing to
do with tridenti "unique" english skills.

Doesn't matter whether it's 1:1 (it's not, EVERYTHING posted
on a messageboard is there for EVERYONE to see.. you're
never just talking to one person, even if you're just
directing your comments at them) or whether I find it
interesting.

The point is it derails and impairs conversation.

And r40f is absolutely right about it being a show-off thing
with yourself.

workable.

matching up the words he can also increase his vocabulary.
