I had, like three years of basic german stuff (in.. middle school?).
durch für hinter gegen ohne um stuff. my vocabulary I built more or less on my own, but grammatical rules are from school.. I don't remember them too well, though, and go by ear (what sounds good is often right).

yeah, french is also easy to understand by connecting it to english and my (very) limited knowledge of latin, but I doubt I would make any sense. I have NO ideas what the grammatical rules actually are, but it seems to follow a pattern that is easy to get. Never had french.

I've never had German but yeah by using my other languages I can sort of make a rudimentary atempt at understanding it. Latin is useful in German for understanding the use of cases. I should know 8 years of Latin YUK!

...it seems to follow a pattern that is easy to get.
> don't all languages kinda do?
but there are things that don't follow any logic in french. some orthographic exceptions... and, most of all, the gender of words. foreigners get them confused all the time, and you really can't blame them for that - why are french pants masculine and french socks feminine, for example... there is no reason. you have to learn the gender with the word, and it just sucks.
same in german. maybe even worse, because they have declinations... and a neutral gender that is not always used for objects (die Hose? why not das?)

So are you still staunchly defending the prevelence of English on this board, or have you relaxed your views on a multilingual Board?

There's a difference between discussing languages different to English, and suddenly, without any stimulus, starting to speak in another language in a thread, derailing the conversation and/or argument.
I've explained why i'm against this so many times in this thread, would you please just understand why I'm bringing this topic up. Christ.

don't all languages kinda do?
well, yes. what I meant was similar to my language (and most other european languages) instead of for instance the japanese form where I find that the subject often is at the very end of the sentence.
johns socks ---> socks of john

|
umm..
Don't quite get what you're saying there.
Socks of John: socks = subject John = proper noun in the genetive
John's socks: John's = proper noun with possessive ending socks = subject
at least, we're assuming the socks are the subject, since there's nothing else to go on.. ie, they're sentence fragments. not sentences.
so therefore there really isn't a subject at all. but there's less chance of john being the subject than socks.

I actually agree about this - English is the main language of the board.
I find it annoying when people are using different languages a lot. it's ofcourse true that there's all kinds of nationalities visiting the board, but exactly because of this fact it is nice to use one common language.
I'm not talking about a sentence dropped here or there, ofcourse. it's been happening more and more though, whole parts of threads are in a different language.

it's all about communication, really. if your English is bad, it won't help just switching to your own language.
I don't think there's anything to enforce, btw, it's more of
a request.
