After the fourth PowerBook in just over a year, I
really have had it with Apple

I am looking to get a full refund of £2529 on this piece of
shit so that I can buy a decent PC laptop that will have
capability to do my music stuff AND play PC games great.

I am currently looking at the AlienWare Area-51m 7700 with
these specs:

Intel® Pentium® 4 Processor 570J w/ HT Technology 3.8GHz
1MB Cache
2GB Dual Channel DDR2 PC-4200 533MHz - 2x1024MB
2 hard drives set-up as a RAID device

all for £2,559.02

i've been that long out of the PC laptop biz that I don't
know if this is gonna be decent enough

what do you guys reckon?
i need help as i'm going to Apple store tomorrow!

yet another logic board failure - i come home from work,
switch it on....it's on for no more than 15 mins and the
thing is blisteringly hot and it gives me a major graphics
failure on the screen - both of which are symptoms of a
major logic board failure

this machine is little over a month old, purchased on May
10th

the best advice I can give you is do not buy a laptop
with a desktop-processor (i.e pentium 4)
. Make sure
there's an M somewhere... (so pentium 4 M is ok). You'll
notice that the processor speed on the Ms are lower than the
regular ones, but a desktop processor will never perform at
the same speed in a laptop due to the heat.. it also uses
lots of battery.. and there's a difference in the way the
processor is built, so you can't really compare hz.

do you know of any laptop machines that are pentium M
processors and that have the nVidia GeForce 6800 graphics
card?

and that can be set up with internal RAID drives?

I don't really know too much about the other things, I only
know that about the processor because my brothers comp went
down from overheating 'cause it had a desktop processor. One
of my roommates has a good overview of things, but he's not
here right now... I could ask him tomorrow and post back if
you haven't gotten answers by then...

from what i've heard about the pentium M machines is that
the chip will run at slower speeds when on battery power,
which for what i'm gonna use it for will be useless

i just wish Apple would get their act together - all my
software is Mac based. ever since they started doing iPods,
they've let their computing products go down hill

I think it runs on slower speed when idle. If you use
100%, it will run on 100%.

Savrow do good laptops. Very powerful. But again overpriced.
Apparently the dell XPS laptop is actually quite good. But
then it's Dell so it has keylogging hardware :P

I have heard HP have been making good laptops lately, but
then again, I used a HP Pavilion for 5 years, and hated
every day of it (but that was a desktop).

yeah, HP computers suck ass! my parents used to have one...
first, the video-card that was in it stopped working in the
middle of some photoshopping (I now have this card in my
comp and it works poerfectly.. it was just some fuck with
the rest of the comp) and then the whole motherboard-thingie
just stopped working for no reason. I changed the fuse and
bios-batteries and whatever tech-people (not hps tech
people.. they conveniently never replied to emails and
calling them just isn't possibl.. I asked on some tech board
on the webs) told me to, but the motherboard was just burnt
off. Everything but the motherboard was still working
perfectly.. I think there was some wrong wiring in that
comp, and I bet it's hp's fault and they're fucking annoying
bastards!

it's really a shame mac is dropping the powerpc, because
it's a superior chip

i have had a new pc laptop for a few weeks now and it is
still working very well (to my own suprise.) But but, im
only using this one for audio, it's pretty much 100 percent
optimized for music making and im only running audio apps
(on a seperate harddrive) so I have no idea how this
computer would act if I threw some games in here and started
to mess around, Before i started cleaning this up it was one
of those "multimedia monsters" and I made it my top priority
to clean shit out and rearange things to make them suite me
(and my music) but as i said, im not sure at all how it
would act with games and stuff like that, the spec's on the
PC youre thinking of looks pretty got damn extreme though,
but i STILL cant tell you that things are going to run
totally fine on a PC as im probably the only one ive ever
met who have had an good experience with a PC laptop.

Good luck

PC's that are well constructed, and are properly set up are
wonderfully stable. Its when you get the most affordable pc,
or you get your pc from a bad company that you find
computers that crash. Unfortunately, anybody can put
together a pc with cheap parts. Apples come practically out
of the box. If you spend the same ammount you would for a
powerfull mac, on a powerfull and well built pc, you will
see an increase in preformance, and it will be perfectly
stable.

My computer works perfectly. The only complaint I have is
the instability of my 'customized' version of Cubase SX. No
problems anywhere else, and my computer cost $800. However,
to be able to play games and get professional sound, I did
add another $500 dollars in parts.

I see, my computer is a intel pentium 4 laptop 3,2 ghz with
1024ram, people told me when i said that i was getting this
that it would not perform as well an regular 3,2ghz and i
even read the same things in magazines and got totally
worried that it would suck, but after getting an external
faster harddrive this one works just as good as my
girlfriends 3,2ghz desktop computer with the exact same
specs. And as i "cleaned" up my computer it even runs much
more smoothly then her dirty thing with icons all over the
got damn screen.

Im not saying this to take an part of the pc vs mac battle
or anything, im just really happy that this computer is
running as well as I expected it too and I was really afraid
of getting dissapointed there for a while, now i feel at
ease and will continue my search for an good external
soundcard...........!

it's a lovely day by the way
