electronic music not appreciated?

compared to rock music that is..i was at some meeting with
music fans today and out of 8 of us i was the only one to
name electronic artist to be one of my fav 3 music artists.
everyone else was naming rock, indie, metal, post rock and
punk bands..the thing they miss the most in electronic music
is the lack of lyrics from what i could understand..they
don't mind listening to something instrumental but only as a
background music or something. personally i don't mind the
lyrics if the music is good (unless it's real shit music)..
damn, some of them could write books about history of rock
music but then they thought aphex twin were two guys..it
appears rock fans are more narrow minded :)

..because you hang out with people who don't appreciate it?

I know a few people who do appreciate it, so I wouldn't say
it's not appreciated.

am, im sure of that!

its true in most cases, you have your open minded rockers
witch are dead sound and repect everyones opinion on music,
then you have more arrogent/ignorant ones that come out with
wild claims like "its shit cause its made on a laptop" etc.
i hang around with 4 people regularly 3 are metalers one out
of them is very open minded he likes all sorts of stuff and
me and him tell each other about new artists and such hes
the one i get along with best out of the group.the others
are very uptight about there music and not open to very much
variation at all, if its "strange" or "odd" the'll treat it
as a joke or not take it in at all..im not sure what it is
that made them think like this but im glad im not one of
them

I think it's mainly because electronic music is relativley
new. Rock music has a history. People of rock and other
genres may have seen the emergence of electronic music and
dismissed it, thus creating a stigma throughout the masses,
which continues to this day.

well, they gave as main reason the lack of lyrics..i asked
them whether instrumental music doesn't evoke any emotions
in them, and apperantly it doesn't..it just sounds empty and
meaningless to them..

i know some people into electronic music btw, but im talking
about people who take music to be the most important thing
in their lifes.

electronic music has never been nearly as mainstream as
(western) commercial pop or rock music, which almost always
use traditional instruments. the masses are used to hearing
vocal pop - a strong melody with sung lyrics is what most
people like to hear. most rock music is essentially pop or
blues music anyway, so it's obvious why most people like
that. stuff like aphex twin is melodic, but way too weird
to be an instant mainstream hit like your average pop/rock
song.

From where I'm looking at, the main cause would be the
overexposure of mainstream (read: bad quality) electronic
pop, which has re-enforced the negative stereotypes about
electronic music present in the early 90s. Simply hearing
the stuff on the top 10 for many years has made a
difference. Many people have gotten really into awful euro
trance in the late 90s, found that this kind of music is not
something they would ever like in the long term, and ditched
all electronic music as being part of the same cultural
wave.

I have to say though, If I take 8 music fan friends, maybe 7
of them would name some of the artists loved here in their
top 3.

i would never want to see it ("idm") be commercialized ever
because then it will push people to be very apprehensive if
they like it or not for whatever reason

well, this one guy said there's no way a piece of music
could intrigue him nearly as much as a line of good
lyrics..damn, he started quoting parts of lyrics from bunch
of bands, even bands i said i like and he didn't :)
for me it's like 90% about music and 10 about the lyrics..

Sometimes a good rhyme (as in hiphop) will override the
music, but in those cases the music, or 'beats' rarely is an
important part of the idea. For myself, it's always about
the music, although I canl listen to a bunch of [good] mc's
rapping over the same beat for hours with no complaints

EXACTLY! The music/composition has so much more feeling to
it! lyrics are just something over the top of the rest! It's
so frustrating it hurts! You are not alone in your angst!

ok, not to make them look bad - none of them named shit
bands for their favs - they all named awesome rock bands and
not some pop crap so obviously they know good music.

anyway, i'll definitely try to intrigue them for trying out
some good electronica stuff! i'll report here in about a
year how that went :)

too late, buddy. :( have you heard a pop song in the last
five years? or seen graphical advertisements? or seen a
few seconds of mtv? idm has long since been swallowed by
that monster.

Not read, heard, and that makes a huge difference in my
book. When it comes to mc'ing, delivery really counts big
time. If the music really sucks though, there's not much
that can be done

they are simply predjudiced and closed-minded. i used to
listen to rock (and older industrial) exclusively because i
didn't realize that there was something to electronic music.
when i found out about AE and aphex, the rest came very
naturally to me. i don't know why they would have
difficulty unless they don't want to give it a shot.

Not always. I have many friends who in my book rate quite
high in the music knowledge book that simply are not into
much electronic music. This is after having heard stuff like
"I care because you do". I think some people simply prefer
analogue acoustic instruments to electronic sound, and
there's nothing wrong with that. Variation is always needed
and it's a requirement for healthy music culture.

i can't believe you care. in fact, i still don't believe you
do. you forget the appeal of idm is that it is elisitist,
and therefore safe in your own haven of bullshit. in
summary, nobody cares.

jesus fucking christ really come on

no variation is an awesome thing, but these people should be
open for all kinds of music..i don't mind if rock fans only
appreciate rock music, there are plenty of people into
electronica who don't listen to anything else. but these
guys are music lovers.
