Erm. Not for me I don't think. If it's like an actual voice
singing maybe yes but when it comes to analord/daft punk I'd
say no.

it's not a vocoder. it's an "extreme" application of
Autotuning.
it's used to correct singers when they sing out of key
without needing to record the whole singing again.

although I think madonna used a vocoder in die another day.
but Cher used autotune I believe.

And to create that robotic effect which pisses me off.

I hate Cher.

It wasn't Cher's idea though, really, it was the very young
producer, whos name I don't know, but I remember him on a
interview on TV saying how he tried it out when they were
recording the song and they liked it and went with it. I
don't know how it worked but the voice would reach certain
levels and kick off the effect, or something.

I quite like that song anyway.

What you can do is program it to redirect frequencies when
certain other frequencies have been reached, so say someone
is singing in a c note, 6th octave, as soon as that singer
hits a csharp, then the autotuner automatically redirects
the frequency to a fourth octave, giving the effect of a
immediate change that isn't humanized at all. When you use a
lower frequency for the pitch resynthesis, it sounds
granulated or computer generated. You can also use
variables, so that in the first bar it will redirect that
note to the fourth octave, but in the second bar, if the
same process is repeated, then it will redirect to maybe the
third octave for a note, and then redirect back to the sixth
octave.

As well, you can use it to filter out certain notes
according to different harmonic scales, so that if you are
playing it according to, say the enigmatic scale, then
whenever you sing or play a d it will automatically
resynthesize that note as an e or d sharp, depending on
which frequency is closer.

Sorry;

resynthesize that note as an e or c sharp, depending on
which frequency is closer.

i heard it has to do with the singer actually being able to
sing (since the feature is intended for people who are
slightly off). sing correctly into it and you get the robot
effect. too bad the mental associations are crap, it could
have been put to some good use by someone maybe

Well, that is what its intended for... but it also can be
use quite easily to wrong things just as much as it is to
right things.

The right producer can use this technique on a mediocre
singer, and make her sound like a great singer, without
anyone being able to tell the difference.

I wish it would have been the other way around.

Did the vocoder kill Cher?

...as mentioned it´s no vocoder and vocoders suck (they are
so overused!) anyway so it really doesn´t matter...

personally, i like a vocoder, but i rate better an heil
talkbox, as popularised by flaxen-haired peter frampton, or
roger troutman from 70s funk sensation, zapp.

personally i don't y see why a bad song would kill off an
excellent piece of equipment. It wasn't such a bad song and
she's an eccentric woman, you can't hate eccentricity
because when you become old you'll most likely be considered
eccentric yourself.
