What's happening to AFX?

What's happening to Richard D. James?

The genius, mozart of electronic music, the man who amazed
and stunned in the 90's, the man who created new sounds, new
experiments, he was the number 1.
He made the best drill'n'bass, the best techno-acid, the
best ambient, some awesome piece of classic's music...

Now where is the genius? A part the new piano' songs tracks
his music style is stopped to the mid of 90's.
Autechre are trying to explore new musical worlds and new
musical experience but Richard is stopped.

Nobody can imagine what Richard could create with his talent
and geniality... I hope AFX one day back to surprise and
shock us, like he did in the past.

WooÆ’erAttack

Hes a genius, and always will be a genius.

Listen to his latest effort Drukqs, its pure skills and its
proof that he really is a genius.

Yeah, what is it with the Wales/Canada/Sweden theme to this
MB?...If we had a map it'ld be obvious something
geographically fishy was going on...

Yeah, but if you got a big pair of scales and put all the
Welsh/Canadians/Swedes on one side and everyone else on the
other, I've a feeling the scales would a) not balance and
b)possibly break...

Anyways, the welsh tend to be a bit porky anyway so this
sort of experiment would be doomed...They also tend to
fidget a lot, again mucking up any true scientific study of
the .NU demographics....

Woofer I think the same way. Its just no the same anymore,
whats with the new cd? I almost never listen to it, I find
it to be SO boring it hurts sometimes. Hes just reinvented
himself.... not made anything new... which is SAD.

most innovative tracks cause he doesnt wanna get ripped off.
And i understand him. But as an afx fan im not very happy.

I find the new one to be excellent. Prepared piano is a nice
logical step for Richard James. I wonder if he'll work with
Kronos soon. I predict some very interesting collaborations
to come.

But like Woofer says, its nothing new, its not too
suprising, or atleast it shouldnt be to people who know and
enjoy the past works.. ...... .... of RDJ.

Arch, probably you didn't understand what I mean.
I like drukqs too, it's a good album but apart piano' song
there's nothing new inside, there isn't much
experimentation.
Drukqs is mostly drill'n'bass (probably old tracks
rearranged), but there isn't the innovation who I'm waiting
from Richard D. James.
When I speak of innovation I speak about experimental album
like Confield by Autechre, not Drukqs or Go Plastic by
Squarepusher. Time ago Richard used to invent new sounds and
music style with a lot of inspiration, I hope he'll shock us
again with new music.

WooÆ’er

for example: I bet gwarek2 is a really new afx track.

why oh why oh why are people disappointed with drukqs? its a
fantastic record and one that no one could have predicted
rich would release. as for not as innovative as
autechre...what? for the love of god!!!...my only gripe is
the artwork which is the worst sleeve ive ever come
across-reflex -'boring'? have you no ears under that
ridiculous bobble hat young man? drukqs is superb..unsure
what you were expecting the twin to release...maybe a cure
for cancer? at the end of the day he has eight pints of
blood like the rest of us-he is not a genius as genius's do
not exist...even leonardo da vinci who invented the
helicoptor intended for it to be made from solid wood!!! .
anyway i love drukqs. and the welsh.

Probably you didn't read well my post or I wasn't enough
clear.
I like drukqs very much, Vordhosbn in one of the best tracks
who Richard made in his story but I'm speaking about
innovation not about good tracks.
I could bet who Richard wrote Vordhosbn in 1996 and it could
be a track of Hangable Autobulb.
Arched Maid Via RDJ could be a DRUKQS track and you wouldn't
never know it.

Anyway I repeat who I like DRUKQS.

Drukqs has some of his most detailed tracks ever, dunno what
yall wanted?

I mean if you compare his drill n base tracks on drukqs with
his old ones in detail you see a lot of difference.

I think Drukqs has some of the best tracks that he ever
created like Ziggo, Ogiyja Switch, Cock10, 54 cymru,
Vordhosbn, Meltphace etc etc

And I dont have to comment on the piano tracks wich is the
most beautiful melodies he ever written except some SAW 2
tracks like Lichen, Rubarb etc.

Flame me ;)

Girl Boy song is a masterpiece song but it was innovative in
the 1996 not today.

I don't like it that much either, his new drill style has
too many samples thrown in, i rekcon, it sounds petty but it
irritates me.
I'd rather some more ICBYD kinda stuff rather than showing
off how detailed he can make something.

It's almost as if people were expecting Aphex to come up
with a brand new note or to have found the missing chord...

Theres a lot more people working in electronic music
nowadays so RDJs is bound not to feel as innovative as it
once did...and it's 1000x times easier to get hold of any
music nowadays than even 5yrs ago...

it's like trying to recreate your first Crack pipe or first
trip...bound not to work..

I love drukqs...probably one of his best albums (SO
FAR!!!...)...

The Mozart of electronic music??? Why? Have you studied
Mozart's music? I think he still makes the best Drill'n'Bass
I've heard. I'm only a bit disappointed with some of the
piano pieces...

offline KEN from BIRMINGHAM (United Kingdom) on 2002-02-18 14:55 [#00092629]

see i dont understand how can you possibly not dig the piano
stuff for example if you love what rich has done in the
past? now i admit i know fuck all about playing any type of
instrument, so from a technical point of view, i dunno, they
may be floored, but they still sound lush-just like anything
as moody and gorgoeus off saw2? and as for the drill and
bass stuff, can you not see the technical and complexity of
these composistions? how can they be deemed boring? i buy
loads of drill and bass and still seek out the harder
spectrum of old skool drum n bass, and these tracks off
drukqs are trully out there-they sound like nothing else!!
would you like me to walk you through that again? i mean, am
i missing something here? hello? H.E.L.L.O.????

offline WooferAttack from Milano (Italy) on 2002-02-18 15:26 [#00092655]

I repeat who I like DRUKQS and it's one of Richard's best
release... If Richard release this album in the 1996 it was
innovative too...

I think who everybody here know who Richard told that some
of the drukqs' tracks are old of 7-8 years, and the more
recent Nanou2.

offline Laserbeak from Netherlands, The on 2002-02-18 15:27 [#00092657]

Hello, I love his Drill'n'Bass stuff, read my post again. As
for the piano tracks, I had just bought Claude Debussy and
Maurice Ravel's piano pieces and when I listened to AFX's
piano pieces afterwards I was a bit disappointed. I think
Richard should stick with doing what he does best.

offline Laserbeak from Netherlands, The on 2002-02-18 15:35 [#00092663]

There are lots of tiny details on the Drukqs album that are
very innovative, they're just not as "in-your-face" as on
Autechre's latest releases. I think Richard chose to make
more pleasing tracks instead of the sound of machines going
nuts.

offline WooferAttack from Milano (Italy) on 2002-02-18 15:39 [#00092666]
Points: 12920 Status: Lurker

Probably could be who the tiny details on Drukqs was 6-7
years old.

About Autechre's latest releases aren't my favourites, I
prefer old Autechre's album like Amber or Incunabula.

About me this is only an interesting conversation about
drukqs, music and aphex twin with different point of view.

Anyway, my final valuation is who I like drukqs much but it
isn't innovative, imho.

JESUS, richard said it himself that drukqs wasnt a good
album, he said he just released that as his last album for
warp records. So, he just got that shit out of the way, you
know, to make good music, woofer, you dont have to
revolutionize the entire genre with every album you make...
