my mate johnl has about 18gb of video game music. i don't
understand it. i don't even understand how there can be 18gb
of vgm out there to get.

apparently it's something to do with "nostalgia". WUTEVA.

oh yeah, a lot more than nes, we're talking *everything*.
but nintendo systems are his fetish, so it seems. i've
posted the url to this thread in our irc channel so once he
wakes up he'll no doubt come here, post a very comprehensive
list of his favourites, and leave xlt again. like keyser
soze.

How is zelda a copout? With every game they have
consistently made good music to go along with it. The theme
song is classic... and the dungeon songs were great!

What? Were you expecting something a little harder to
place?

Try Blaster master level 4 and 5 (outside for 5 inside for
4) and there is one bar of music in the sixth level that is
amazing. Plus the bassline for mario bros two, whenever your
character was inside the caves was great. Never found a game
with a better soundtrack. Level one of marble madness is
cool too. Dr Mario on fever is pretty cool.

None of them beat zelda though.

From the normal NES, I'd say all three Castlevanias and
Ninja Gaidens, Journey to Silius. On Genesis, Dynamite
Headdy, Herzog Zwei and Thunder Force 4 are my favorites,
and Streets of Rage 3 was REALLY hardcore, it's practically
IDM and it was made in '93 or something on a shitty sound
chip. Remarkable stuff from Yuzo Koshiro.

And I think the soundtrack for Earthbound/Mother 1 on SNES
is tied with the Beatles and the Free Design and a couple
others things as the absolute best music I've ever heard,
period, video game or not. It's just magic sound.

Zophar.net has the unadulterated soundtracks for pretty much
every classic game.

zelda, mario, and metroid are tied for me... that and bubble
bobble was catchy as hell too.

nice avatar b666 i love marion peck's work

castlevania for the super-nes had by far the best
soundtrack
i belive they even did a cover of a MAURICE RAVEL's "Scarbo"
on one level! fancy.
