My dad's on trial!

offline KEYFUMBLER from DUBLIN (Ireland) on 2005-05-23 09:00 [#01609577]
Points: 5696 Status: Lurker

background:

- he's lived in paris most of his life and is 65 now
- he's an absent father to me
- i always found him quite cool on my yearly visits to him
his politics, tastes in music, artistic persuits and
general outlook.

So out of the blue i get this email:
*******
"....I have spent a couple of days in the hands of the
police for something bad I did 12 years ago. I cannot move
from Paris until the trial. It could be jailed for quite
sometimes that means that might die in. Don’t be surprised
if you and your sister are questioned.

No matter what is going to happen be sure that also I have
been an absent father I never did anything wrong with any of
you.

I love you.

Carry on been a good chap and be nice to your mother

Don’t ask me questions.

We can always keep in touch by E-mail.

If you happen to be in Paris within the next few weeks
let’s hope we shall be able to see each other."
******
This is the biggest WTF?!! ever. All sort of shit is going
through my head:
- rape, murder, sexual abuse (given the "i never did
anything wrong to any of you" statement), robbery, assault.

He's a passive guy and was a concientious objector in the
french/algerian war in the '50's for which he was imprisoned
for 6 months. He did aikido for years and was a gentle old
soul. He has always been quite poor though. 12 years ago i
was 18 and nearly conscripted to the french army as i was
born there. At the time my father was questioned as he
should have registered me but didn't. I suspect theres a
connection but can't see what it is. Shit... i'll have to
fly over soon to visit him. This is MAD!

yes, that "I never did anything wrong with any of you" is
rather a unusual comment to make.

nice that he doesn't want you to ask questions. if I were
you, I'd still ask questions - it's not very fair to dump
this on you lke this.

something.

it could ofcourse very well be that he doesn't want
questions asked because he might be afraid the police is
monitoring his communications and he could worsen the
situation for himself.

Wow that's one hell of a head-fuck. Hope you're not too
messed up as a result. I was thinking the exact same as
yourself and then qrter as i read "I never did anything
wrong with any of you"..

And i'd agree with qrter too in that he should allow you to
find out what the fuck is going on and why..

Hope everything works out alright.

yep its a weird one.... i reckon its something like tax
evasion alright. I'm wondering would he take to jail ... he
mentioned it would kill him.... maybe "he" would kill him,
given the choice of that or facing incarseration. I don't
know him that well actually outside of the odd email and
anual visits. It could be anything.

(I posted here cos it's a whacky story - he likes autechre
and squarepusher, if that helps)

'I have
been an absent father I never did anything wrong with any of

you.'

Sounds more like the sort of thing you WOULD say to your
kids if you were an absent father facing some time in
prison. It doesn't necessarily have to relate directly to
the reason for his being arrested/charged. He might just be
trying to reach out to you and be nice, despite having been
absent.

I've heard that the police are particularly harsh in France
(compared to over here at least). It could be any number of
things that don't amount up to something nearly as bad as
rape, murder, sexual abuse, robbery, assault, etc.

That's just my irrelevant opinion, anyway.

It might perhaps be a bit dodgey having posted his email in
this thread. Could it adversely affect his case in some way,
do you think?

Just some thoughts.

Regardless, I hope that it all turns out alright mate. Best
wishes and all that.

I thought he meant he would be in prison long enough that he
would die of old age. Dunno.

This isn't really that big of a deal if you compare it to
the whole thread closing fiasco here on the internet.

offline KEYFUMBLER from DUBLIN (Ireland) on 2005-05-23 10:37 [#01609813]
Points: 5696 Status: Lurker

well if he's in prison that long.. 10/20 years..(he's
healthy as fook).. then it ain't tax-evasion. He better
spill the beans .... laying this shit on me.

On a positive note, if he does got to jail, his apartment in
paris is rent controlled and could possibly me taken over my
yours truly.... ooh la la!

Someone has broke the silence finally, justice must be

"Maybe somekind of politically motivated terrorism?"

"Funnily" enough, my wayward pa-pa got himself involved in
the cunting IRA cocksuckers in the 70's around the time he
met my mother. He ended up minding a safe-house for them in
the middle of Ireland. He did all this cos he was involved
in anti-establishment stuff in france, moved to london met
some irish and came over. They heard that he had been in the
algerian war and wanted him to shoot somebody in Northern
Ireland but he refused and ended up driving a get-away car
as the IRA sprung one of their captured big-boys from
hospital. He maintains that it got a bit heavy for him and
gradually disassociated himself from them, realising that
partying with my young ma was a much better idea! He went
back to france in 74.

He's always told me that he felt he was definitely known to
British authorities and is sure his apartment had been
searched a few times over the years... like when a British
dignatory was visiting France. As far as i was concerend it
was all history and not something that could come back and
bite him isn his french ass. He describes it all as a sort
of misspent middle-age and is adamant that he didn't get
involved too deep. Since then he';s more or less lived in
Paris writing, becoming a psychotherapist (i know!) and
generally being fairly poor and a bit of a stoner.

I should write a friggin book!

No reply to my emails to him this morning. I'll be talking
to my aunt (mothers side) about it today as she works for
the cops here and is very worldly wise. I ain't told my sis
or ma yet but they're generally niot in contact with my dad
as much as i am. Its surreally exciting innit? Injust hope
he ain't hurt anyone.
