This has probably been mentioned and this video that I'm
about to post has also probably been mentioned. However.
Fuck me. Yes, that's right. Fuck me. Bugger me backwards if
you will. If you are not impressed by this video then you
are probably a time traveller from the future who has seen
better.

If you don't watch this video then you'll wish you had for
the rest of your days. I'll make sure of it.

It's not actual gameplay, but it's a demo of what we should
expect. There's a lot of debate about whether or not it's
real-time (done with the engine), I would say it isn't. But
I'd expect something very close to this, the PS3 is a real
beast and Guerilla are ambitious and talented. Killzone 1 is
pretty remarkable for a game running on a little 333mhz
processor and shitty little video card. My favorite FPS
since Perfect Dark, actually. I'm looking forward to
Killzone 2 more than anything else.

I've seen it.

It's CG.

Stuff may look like that this generation, but that would
take so much work, the game would probably weigh in at about
2 hours worth of play.

We can't know for sure until there is an official statement
on the matter.

If it turns out to be realtime I will be happy.

looks like they, Guerilla, are doing the second one - in
fact, they have a lot of vacancies for Killzone 2:
hm.

I've been thinking for quite a while now about contacting
them and asking if and how they use writers - seeing as I'm
studying to become a writer, I wouldn't mind writing for
games!

Writing for games would be fantastic. Just make sure you
don't work for id Software.

If this does turn out to be realtime, I will feel very
sheepish having just spent 275 dollars buying a top of the
line video card for my computer, as I don't know if it would
be able to handle a game with graphics THAT good... Anyone
know the projected launch price of the PS3?

I just sent them an e-mail, asking if they even use writers.
:)

the only thing I could really do is write for a game or do
translations from Dutch to English (which is something I
certainly wouldn't mind to do to make some extra money), I
can't do any of the real code-stuff. :)

one of the departments at my faculty is largely about
designing games and I know from experience in working with
them that they can REALLY use a few writers.

Cool, good luck with that. Writing in games is like the
final frontier... graphically, sonically, the gaming world
is insanely rich. Games with good writing are still rare
though. The writing isn't up to snuff with everything else
yet. Case in point, Resident Evil 4, which I think might be
pretty much the best game experience ever... if not for its
cripplingly retarded script.

There's been so many heated arguments and insane debates on
IGN about whether or not KZ2 is realtime or not. Some Sony
spokespersons are saying it IS rendered by an engine, but
with some little pre-rendered adornments. Nobody really
knows yet. Personally I LOVE watching the flamewars.

I think the PS3 will be able to do these visuals, although
obviously you can't get the AI and animation to be as
precise and perfect as it is in that video.

I agree - most writing in games ranges from 'piss poor' to
'almost okay' at best. the mistake most designers seem to
make is to think about the writing "oh, we'll do that
ourselves, how hard can it be".

very rarely do you see a person who solely works as a writer
on a game - one of the few I can remember is Terri Brosius
for "Thief: Deadly Shadows" and Marc Laidlaw on "Half-Life
2".

Sony always pull this shit. I can clearly remember the
American goverment actually being afraid of what the PS2 was
supposedly possible of before it arrived, ' a super
computer'. Sony killed the Dreamcast with their PS2 hype and
lies and I'm forever bitter about it! :) So yeah, this
footage is amazing but it's rendered. The jump in quality is
just far too great for this generation, I think I'm safe in
saying the PS3 is not going to deliver these graphics as
much as it would be nice to believe. If this was real time
footage on a consumer console it would be on the national
news and Sony wouldn't be so cagey about it either, they
would be pushing it to fuck and saying "Yes, for sure. This
is 100% real time footage from the game". Have they said
that? No.

thats a good point, and I think it pretty much settles this
argument... or at least it does for me... there was a part
of me really hoping that this could be in game, but like you
said its just far too large a jump in quality... maybe the
PS4 will be able to tackle it. :)

btw, I'll also be forever bitter about Sony killing the
dreamcast, and for being such rich greedy bastards about
paying game companies extra so that they will only code for
them.

did anyone else notice that that video has no crosshair in
the center of the screen? unless they expect you to play
through the actual game without one, it just points even
more towards CGI.

I don't see how people should have so much trouble believing
that's what it's going to look like... that killzone thingie
is done on a computer, but they said that they had trouble
emulating the ps3s cell processor, and that it IS realtime.

oh boy, thanks for the unreal clip! People are just gonna
have to face that "pre-rendered CGI" is becoming an obsolete
concept. Game graphics does it all.

That killzone demo is stunning, and even if the gameplay in
the actual thing sucks, at least the graphics potential is
there.

I thought what he was saying was pretty straightforward. Ok
the terminolgy is complex but it seems to boil down to that
IDM are claiming that one PS3 is more powerful than hardware
costing half a million pounds. Until the PS3 comes out for
sale, no one can really say anything about it's final
performance. No one is doubting it is going to be one beast
of a machine capable of some incredible looking games but
the fact is, Sony now have a reputation for overhype and not
being completely upfront about actual capabilities. We'll
wait and see.
