I read in a computer security report that some spammers make £5K a week (profit)! The really shocking thing is some people must actually be buying the crap they pedal for this to work.
Is there not some way we can ban their 'customers' from the internet, thereby making spamming unprofitable and therefore ceasing to exist?

I'd seriously question the validty of such a report and investigate it's findings. No-one clicks on banners, etc. people can't be fooled that easily anymore, and most ISP's or browsers block pop-ups too now.. I don't think there's serious money to be earnt spamming, at least in the UK.

My mistake it was spyware I read about earlier:
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/05/04/spyware_report/
Anyway though, look at it like this.
Amount of Spam is increasing yes? It would only increase if people are actually making money from it. I don't know who these people are who're buying from Spam but they need to be banned from living ASAP.

well most of us here are smart enough to avoid clicking on bullshit banners and links. But if you recall the 2004 election we see how stupid people really are, then it all makes sense.

The report was something quoted by the BBC and I've heard similar figures mentioned by security professionals (including lecturers on my masters). Admittedly, those are the most successful ones, but presumably even the less professional ones still make a fair whack (particularly as it's largely automated, so you can do it as a second income).
Bear in mind spammers generally get their money for "advertising" ie people clicking on the links/going to the site, rather than actually selling whatever the product is (although, somewhere along the line, someone must be buying the products, for the company concerned to invest in spam-advertising).
There are still a hell of a lot of people who click on popups, especially the more devious ones (eg the ones masquerading as windows warnings/errors, virus alerts, etc.), particularly older people (my parents both do occassionally). they're both 'intelligent people', just not very computer savvy. Add up all the inept people like them, coupled with all the idiots (see weatheredStoner's point) who genuinely do believe they're the 100,000,000th visitor and have just won a ferrari and you can see how they get their figures.
It still doesn't explain who actually spends money on the guff advertised though... :-/
