I repeated every Karl Marx quote I could think of until
I reached my own ‘historic inevitability’ and launched
surge after surge from my hairy boda bag.

Um. I think Al Franken does a better job of taking her
apart, don't you?

When sane people descend to this level of commentary, the
insane have a tendency to throw it in our faces.

I know that if I visit LGF or some other right wing blog
they'll be saying how this is symptomatic of the left's
immaturity and lack of rational arguments. And they'll be
right.

Oh come along, Kev old m8. I'm sure you laugh at a
quite-well-written string of knob gags as much as the rest
of us.

I'd hardly call one silly blog a symptom of left-wing
politics' immaturity; it's unreasonable to expect a leftist
"united front" against coulter and her vile ilk. Sane people
don't like her, and so they churn out a few cheap shots...
the nutcases can piss and moan as much as they want.

Ker-ching! We have a winner. Bad mouthing people in this
manner may be amusing, but it actually works in their favour
as it makes your "camp" look like a bunch of children.

"...left's immaturity and lack of rational arguments."

immature, yes. irrational? no way.

the problem is that the conservatives have always been
totally comfortable with lying and distorting information to
win each argument, and the few left pundits can't get away
with it. when i see cnn or any of those bullshit debate
shows, it's like something out of a school yard bullying
session. the way folks like o'reilly can get them in one of
these inescapable headlocks is fascinating, really.

the unfortunate liberals they occasionally have on those
shows to try and dismember are the voices of reason and
logic, but that is nowhere near as effective as the rawness
of the conservatives', "you would say that you liberal!
don't you realize that the thing you just said is WRONG?!
god, you're stupid!" etc. guess which person joe average
winds up listening to. the insane yelling loud man rather
than the nerdy quiet one. no surprises there.

The republicans are destroying the democrats in the
political arena right now. They are taking control of the
debates and framing them using their own terms.

Like in the one nation under god pledge of
allegiance debate, they're somehow able to frame the debate
as patriots versus athiests (which it's not).

pro-life vs. pro-abortion,
against the current war in iraq? why do you hate freedom and
want our troops to die?,
either you're with us or against us..

it's very hard to debate successfully when the conservatives
are so effective at framing the debates in these terms. in
order to do so means that the liberals have to go all the
way back and explain how the entire premise of the argument
is flawed. when they try to do this they are easilly
dismissed as avoiding the question, or their response goes
right over the heads of the listener.

Guys like O'Reilly are playing to an audience that is not
terribly bright or at the very least not very well informed
and easy to manipulate. So yeah, all they have to do is come
across like dominant alpha gorillas and they've won by
default.

I mean, who are you gonna listen to? Some spindly liberal
with his inconsequential facts or a big robust silverback
gorilla grunting and pounding the table?

The current right-wing style (and it's been used by the
Communists in Russia, the Fascists in Italy, etc.) works
because it appeals to deep neurological predispositions in
our species - and what the liberals are trying to do is make
brussel sprouts sound more appealing than a chocolate hot
fudge sundae. It's an uphill battle.

The difference is that Karl Rove would approach this not by
posting a satirical essay but by starting a smear campaign
that an enemy pundit was fond of being sodomized. Seed it
from enough different anonymous sources and it becomes
"true". There was a documentary on Karl Rove on PBS recently
that was jaw-dropping - he's been honing his dirty smear
tactics since the Nixon admionistration.

That's awesome.

I was beginning to think that no one was really aware of
what the conservatives were doing. At least, I hardly ever
hear anyone mentioning this. Instead, I just see liberals
tripping over themselves and being confused as to what
stance they should take.

it seems like there isn't nearly enough liberals who
understand what's going on, and even if there are, they
certainly don't do anything about it. most democrats aren't
even liberals anyway - they're moderates or right-wing. and
anything that isn't democrat or republican becomes the
extremist lunatic fringe. so it seems that progressives are
paralyzed.

If the Democrats could somehow remove the abortion issue
from their platform, they would trounce the Republicans. But
as long as you have shrews like Ann Coulter, Rush AND the
Moral Majority Democrats will always be the party of
'scissors in a fetus head'.

The Democratic party is now not only up against big
business, gun nuts, and most major news outlets- but also
most organized religions. Thanks to Dub-ya's "faith based
intiative" church's now can compete directly with
non-profits for federal dollars and they can refuse to hire
people to work in their programs based on their religion.
It was a very slick move on the Republicans part-
legalizing politics in the pulpit.
