What kind of mp3 players do you all use? How much did it cost? What kind of connection does it use to hook up to your comp and is it a fast transfer?

I have what qrter has, or similar. It was about 200 canadian.
You burn a data CD of MP3s and listen to it. Easy. I use 12x rewritable disks. I can get 7 or 8 folders of VBR MP3s on one disk.
Advantages over an iPod type device:
- it plays regular CDs so I can sit down and have General Tao chicken downtown and listen to what I just bought.
- whack a couple of NiMH AA rechargeables in there and you're laughing. One charge lasts a few weeks. iPod rechargeable batteries die after a year of recharging, then you have to look up on the internets to find out how to void your warranty.
- much cheaper
- makes you be sexy and unique and not one of those iPod zombies

I have an archos. I use it heavily everyday. I've had it for about 2 years now.
20g Records via line in or mic (great for recording shows & field recordings)
open source firmware
I totally love it. It's been very reliable.
You can change your own batteries and whatnot.

no no no. Cds wont do. Too big.
Plus i have a 1st generation ipod and the batteries haven't worn out in all the years i've had it. (plus nowadays you can buy/replace ipod batteries yourself)
I hate AA batteries too.
Dont tell me everyone has a mp3 discman instead of something non-ipod.

i've never understood portable cd players, even ones that play mp3's. there is one basic design fault with every single one of them ever made:
they're all too fucking big.

I was an avid walkman-user from 16 and onwards.
I just got tired of lugging around all these tapes that held relatively little music, or tapes breaking and having to go through all the trouble of making a new one (never just putting a whole album on a side or something, always the compilations OH GOD THE COMPILATIONS!!)

obviously your coat is big. i even preferred cassettes over cd's for portability because they were a more practical shape to put in your pocket,
and tape doesnt skip.

not really, it's pretty small even.
mp3s in a discman do not skip because the discman loads them in in parts.

You're right on several counts there (especially the obsessive compiling bug, fun but incredibly tiresome at the same time), but i am afraid you neglect one simple, beautiful fact:
hissssssss
Mmmm. And when the batteries are running down, that weird underwatery sound. I love tapes.

I know, i know. I'm just terribly sentimental about the auld tape player, i've had it nearly 10 years now and it's still going strong. Well, maybe not strong, but it's still going.
If only i could find my old headphones. Held together with masking tape and painted black, for STYLE.

iRiver H340.....40gig............ can't remember how much I paid for it in Singapore but my mate bought one here recently for $600. Connects via hi-speed usb (up to 480 Mbps). Colour screen, can watch videos, but you need to convert them to the correct format (screen dimensions, frame rate etc.)

My CD Mp3 player is in volume EQUAL than a first generation iPod. So anybody saying they are too big, well bollocks.
5 9/32"x9/32"x5 1/4" (7,76in³) for my Panasonic SL-CT810 versus 4.02"x2.43"x0.78" (7.75in³) for a 1st generation Ipod

I have an iRiver H340 too. It's really good. 40gb hard drive - you just connect it to a computer by USB and it behaves like an extra hard drive. No need for any drivers or frigging itunes!
The firmware is opensource and there is a group called Rockbox currently developing new firmware for it that should have loads of new features. You can download software to edit the "skin" (i.e. the graphics in the firmware) although I've never bothered doing this.
It has FM radio, you can view photos on it, watch videos (surprisingly good if you're on a long journey) and it has a line in for recording (and a built-in internal mic, although they also supply an external one in the box).
Oh, and you can read text files on it. Not sure if you can do that on the iPod too, though.
All in all, i'm pretty happy with it. It is a lot geekier than an iPod - nowhere near as trendy - which I see as a plus point.

One bad point with the H340 (and H320)......... they have a habit of getting dust under the screen, thereby ruining the display. Mine is ok, but i know of people that have had this problem. And I've been unable to source a really good cover for it.

i was using my tape walkman up until about 6 months ago.
now i have a sony mp3 discman just like a couple of ppl have mentioned. it was a fucking waste of money, for a bit more i could have got a hdd player of 1/3 the size and eleventy-five x more storage.
also my discman isn't very loud... on full volume, i can't listen to it on a plane or in a busy street, i read somewhere that the EU has limited the volume on portable music players to stop people damaging their hearing... what if my fucking hearing is already damaged? ... now i have a player i can hardly hear.
hmm, and the size/volume thing mentioned above, the discman may be the same volume of an ipod, but that doesn't mean it's going to fit in to a jacket pocket, unless your pocket is made of rubber.

What's a good flash-storage player that I could put a few albums on, has a display, good battery life, and good sound quality? I'm so fucking sick of the radio at work, I want something i can have on me while I'm working, which involves loading boxes, so it would have to be small and sturdy?
