it's deffinitly not an amen break. there is only one amen
break and that's the one from the amen brothers track. all
the rest are variations or from other tracks. they may sound
like an amen but it's deffinitly not THE amen break.

the winstons

I know it's cut up. I'm just saying that I don't think it's
the break from the winstons he has cut up. it sounds like
another break . I know I have it somewhere in my samples
folder.
I could be wrong though....

actually, amen is indeed used in mangle 11... DOY! you know
the snare sound at the very beginning? THAT'S the amen
snare. I'm sure the track has pieces of amen in it too.
I could have sworn a track from HAB used amen... can't find
it...
it's definitely in girl/boy song.

offline guy from sizzle frizzle on 2005-04-19 11:50 [#01570454]

yeh I'm gonna start a thread that goes as such: what
squarepusher songs contain the amen break?

what do you think the rest of the drums are from? other
breaks, or just kits?

offline vlari from beyond the valley of the LOLs on 2005-04-19 12:19 [#01570487]
Points: 13915 Status: Regular

I think the snare is from amen, atleast, and maybe the
bassdrum too. But there's some hits from unknown sources
over it.

offline giginger from Milky Beans (United Kingdom) on 2005-04-19 12:24 [#01570491]

Which leads is neatly to my first statement being correct.

He used the amen break in Girl/Boy song.

Christ!

You should have written it in CAPS, then people would have
been too scared to disagree.

I know squarepusher uses the amen break pretty heavily on a
track from Vic Acid, can't remember which one though.

The amen break is in Mangle 11, although there are
definitely other drums in there as well.

i would say i can't think of any aphex tracks that have an
obvious amen break sample, but that doesn't mean that
elements of it, either in actual sounds or in rhythmic
similarities.

here's a question - what if somebody re-records the same
drum sequence as the amen break and samples it? is it still
the amen? is the defining thing the actual source
recording, or the drum structure? or both? then where does
that leave edits or processing?

offline pomme de terre from obscure body in the SK System on 2005-04-19 14:37 [#01570682]
Points: 11941 Status: Moderator | Show recordbag

imo, the source recording, not the drum structure.

my first sentence should be "..that there aren't elements of
it.."
i hate when i post things that don't make sense and its not
on purpose.

I am confident that the Amen snare at least is in Mangle 11.

offline guy from sizzle frizzle on 2005-04-19 18:36 [#01571123]

it's most definitely the source recording. the timbre of the
drums is very important-- that's what makes the amen break
so unique, same with the think break and the both eyes open
break...

He used the amen in that Bug remix on the "Smojphace" EP, as
Bob said.

"Girl/Boy Song" seems like it has some mangled version of
the "soul pride" break with some extras thrown in. Nothing
about it sounds like the amen to me, really.

There's a universal law that states the Amen Break cannot,
in any way, be artificially replicated, and that anything
that sounds like a snare must have been directly sampled
from it. No way could anyone have possibly re-programmed or
rerecorded a break that didn't use samples of all the
original sounds of the Amen Break, split up, then regathered
to make the Amen Break. Amen Break. Amen, is it the Amen
Break?

i totally dont believe that, it's stupid to just take the
snare or bass, why not sample a better sounding one then
