what is your budget?
Do you want purely audio, or combo audio/home theatre?

hmm, don't know what that translates into U.S. but if it's comparable:
Check out www.audioreview.com for an excellent resource on equipment review. Their forums are also an excellent place to get advice.
The things you'll need:
Good Receiver - Harmon Kardon, Denon, etc. Different receivers can dramatically effect the sound.
Good Cables - Your pick, there are tons Good CDP - Heard about one named Shanling which is supposed to be quite good- import with Brown-Burr chip that runs pretty cheap on Ebay. There are many others, check the reviews and listen when you can.
Speakers - Well, this is the most difficult, and it depends highly on what you want. After doing about 3 months of research I ended up going to a great Hi-Fi stoe to test some speakers, and that's really the best way to get an idea of what you want.
That being said, I'd suggest checking out some Martin Logans or some MagnePan electrostatic speakers. You'd probably need a good subwoofer with each, but there are truly some of the most accurate speakers I have ever heard. Little pricey, but worth it IMHOP.

electrostats are like heaven!
mmm.. I'd like to eat the sound that comes out of them!
most martin logans have active bass-elements in the bottom, I think...

if any kind of speaker would be able to produce maple syrup (in a world where sound and food are one and the same thing), it'd have to be electrostats...

Speakers: B&W bookshelf speakers My Speakers
They are very nice and the best in the price range, I tried loads before choosing these and ended up spending less than I had planned. Comparable Boston Acoustics were $150 more!

crazone - I couldn't afford the Martin Logans personally, but ended up getting some vandersteen's which I personally am really fond of. They are "phase accurate" so they are similar in sound to electrostats but less expensive. They tend to almost to a fault reproduce what is going in to them, so it's pretty necessary to have a good receiver/pre-amp and source. That being said, I really like them.
Check out www.vandersteen.com
Drunken Mastah - When I listened to the lower end Martin Logans the guy had two subwoofers set up with them (one for each side, strange I know). The Logans do have subs in the bottom, but I think for a really full sound it's necessary to have an actual separate.
But fuck, who can afford that shit anyway? Not on my meager salary.

they don't have regular elements, rather a thin plate that vibrates by some electrical magnets. Very crisp and clear sound... some say too unpersonal, but I like it!

They also tend to wear in, the mid range improves with age.
They are my second favorite puchace ever*

How big is the room you are going to be using them in? Is it regularly shaped (rectangle, no bay windows etc.)? Do you have volume restrictions (neighbours)? Will you be using your speakers for TV?

well my room is 20 m² right now but in less than one year it will definitely be a lot more (40 maybe).
It's not for TV, only music. I don't really have volume restrictions.
Is it best with a separate subwoofer ?
