Importance of WARP Records

How important do you think they are with regards to the
industry? Theyve had somewhat a potted history, and so sad
that co-founder Rob Mitchell died in 2001.

Steve got it together and decided to continue after ,uch
soul-searching I believe. But where will he take Warp? It
must be so difficult to continue with such a reputation that
was built at the begining of a new wave of techno artists;
new decent artists seem hard to come by nowadays.

I wonder if they will steer in more of an indie dircetion,
but they have sub-labels to deal with this. It kind of seems
like theyve been running a little bit too much on past
reputatuions of artists at the moment - ae, afx, etc.

I think theres still shit loads of potential though. And I'm
sure they could pump more into marketing themsleves
better...

Warp stopped taking risks 10 years ago...

I am glad they are steering away from electronic music. If
they continue to travel down that path, everybody is going
to think of Aphex Twin and Autechre when they think of warp.

Leave the IDM to the vanity labels.

new warp artists suck.. commercial bullshit for the
masses..
I start hating warp for doing this

I will agree with you on that for maximo park (fucking emo
motherfucking radiohead rippoff I hate emo radioheadish
bullshit)

On the other hand, !!! is great, and you cannot deny this.

On the third hand here is a writeup on the new warp signee.
IF its half as good as it sounds, it could be awesome:

While wandering the streets of London, a member of the
band !!! bought ‘Big City Loser’ in Rough Trade records
by pure chance on it's original limited vinyl pressing
release on the hip Château Rouge label in France.. Blown
away by this funky and brutal deconstruction, he played it
to Steve Beckett who runs Warp Records. Steve flipped over
this Parisian mutant. Equally, CHOK ROCK could not believe
it when he received a call asking for him to jump on the
next Eurostar for a very important meeting, where he then
signed to Warp Records.

Instant fans include Trevor Jackson who calls CHOK ROCK
“fun, mutant, sonic madness”, like “Akufen meets
Parliament”.

‘Big City Loser’ is re-released by Warp on 25th May
2005, re-mastered and with an extra track on the CD entitled
‘Take A Plane’. Another EP and album will follow this
year. Waiting for the spring, CHOK ROCK is in his studio and
is creating a sound which will be brutal, beautiful,
Parisian party music…

hmm.. ok I understand you cause it's in my opinion well
produced music, but it doesn't fit into warp records for me
simply because it's just music that everyone likes.. to
poppy.; and second reason why I don't give a damn about them
is because they "discovered" those choc rok guys.. awful
music.; saw them playin live last week.; really bad stuff,
pff

WARPs life is bound to the lives of autechre and rdj -->
WARP is dying.

Hmmm... Well, !!! is great (not just well produced, but fun.
Definate messy party music). Maximo Park sucks... sounds
exactly like someone at warp could use some extra spending
money.

Honestly, warp is still producing good music. The new
prefuse is great, the Two Lone Swordsmen album that came out
last year is still one of the best rock albums I have heard
in a while. There are a couple others that I can't think of
right now that are high on my list of likes very much.

sure they are still producing good music!! totally agree
with you in this point, but their whole image goes in the
wrong direction just because of some of the new acts..

i enjoyed 2 lone swordsmen but nowhere near on the level of
some aphex stuff.

what worries me a bit is the fact that rdj and jenko
apparantly dislike the warp label and are merely fulfilling
contracts.

but theres bleep, warpfilms, et al too...

Didn't squarepusher and aphex speed up 'the exploding
psychology' and call it 'fuck warp records'?

Which label does everyone think ae will sign to if they
leave warp?

they used to get us new, inventive stuff..nowdays they give
us pop music. they still depend on people they signed + 10
years ago which is great, but appart from that they don't
care much about new, different music..

I've seen this change starting a couple of years ago. At
some point they just didnt seem to care about their output
anymore. I bought everything they released with no regred
but then they came Mira Calix - One on One and even worse
that Mercedes Bentley - Versace Armani shit. Since then Im
more catious before I buy anything. I hope they recover but
now It doesnt really matter.

Maybe on SKAM but then they wouldnt sell as much as they do
on WARP. They could release an expensive binder filled with
old unmastered fake tracks we all buy anyway to keep the
cash flowing..

Good music is good music, reguardless of what label it has.

warp has stopped being experimental now the rest of the
world has caught up with them. the artists like ae and afx
made futuristic music, but it turns out it wasnt far into
the future, and now that the future is now they are all
stuck wondering what to do next.

warp is giving the masses what they want - rock and hip hop
- because the experimental artists have run out of ideas and
they dont want the label to die.

offline Exaph from United Kingdom on 2005-04-14 03:46 [#01564560]

i just think theres a genuine lack of electronic talent.
problem is afx, ae, tom, etc. have already been there done
that.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-04-14 03:48 [#01564561]

Its not like they are making normal rock and pop music. They
are just cattering to a different underground crowd. I can't
think of any albums released on warp that might qualify as
pop...

Probly the poppiest one might be the new prefuse, and that
is still pretty leftwing compared to britney spears or
neptunes whatever else the radio is trying to sell us
nowadays. That is the kind of music the masses want.

though its funny cos jenko probably woudnt have been on warp
if it wasnt for aphex. warp didnt respond to jenkos tapes
but when afx played them his stuff and he got signed. and
now jenko whines about the label!!

jenko sounds like a bit of a twat to be honest.

i got the Chok Rock EP and it's pretty disappointing.
nothing really new, it sounds like it could have been on
output a couple of years ago.

on the other hand i like maximo park (it just sparks off
latent indie-ness in me i guess) and i thought gravenhurst's
album was the best thing released last year by anybody.

the label still has scott herren, plaid and BOC - you can't
say they have got a bad roster.

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-04-14 04:07 [#01564570]

Warp kind of has a guaranteed market.

And its not like they couldn't pick up a few more talented
electronic musicians... there are hundreds of competent
musicians who are capable of producing records that sell to
any demographic, and a lot of them would jump at the chance
to be signed to warp. If they were really desparate, they
could farm the demo's that they received.

bob - jenko = pusher yes

merg - afx and jenko fulfilling contracts with good albums
is good now yes, but not for warps long-term future. and i
know quite a lot about this actually:

SQUAREPUSHER

What Warp record had the biggest influence on you?

"'LFO" by LFO - that's what got me into electronic music. It
had a depth to it I hadn't heard before. There was something
very English about it. It was more open and emotional and
less portentous than the American stuff. And it had a sense
of humour, which is pretty fucking essential! When I started
making music, I sent Warp tapes and I always rib them about
the fact they never replied. It wasn't until Aphex played
them my stuff that they signed me!"

How should Rob and Steve celebrate?

"I don't reckon they should bother - it's not worth
celebrating. It illustrates too much self-interest. they put
out good music - that's all that matters."

What will you be doing in ten years time?

"I was thinking a few years ago that hopefully we'd have
migrated into space 'cos the planet's gonna cave in. So if
I'm still alive, I'll be making music in a space-ship."

Who's your favourite Warp artist?

"I respect most of Warp - but I don't necessarily like it. I
reckon Boards of Canada is what I'm into most, although
Autechre are smart. Aphex - if he made any music. I like the
hermetic nature of what Boards are doing - they're not fazed
by what's going on in the real world."

---

Nice guy? Sounds like a cunt.
