It seems you have been sniped. It's annoying when it happens, but there's not much you can do about it other than play it dirty like them. There are some programs or sites that let you do this apparantly, but I have not tried them. They work by placing your bid just in the nick of time and thus hinders the other bidders from snatching the item from you.

I've heard of them, but I don't really understand the attraction, serves me right for not bidding more I s'pose, I was admittedly trying to get a bargain...This and That for 25 quid? I didn't deserve it :-)

I think it's worth a look into if you really want something on there. Even a high bid might not save you, I know cause I've lost some of those too... But they will come up again for sure, and those might have the cover still glued together (a problem with the this 'n' thats)

But how will that help me any more than putting in my highest bid like normal? (The problem I find with more obscure releases is knowing what to actually search for...i.e. for that one a search for "Autechre This" or "Autechre That" wouldn't have given me that one...)

It won't, so I'll just stop here :)
I generally just search for autechre and gescom to see what's on there and keep interesting stuff in my watchlist until they are near the end and start bid (if it's reasonably price) in the last 10 or 5 minutes. It usually works well enough for me.

True enough, but sometimes people use the more well-known name to maximise the viewings...and anyway, even if I'd've put the correct artist and title it wouldn't've come up(!)

It's not "playing dirty" to bid in your best interest rather than someone else's. The way ebay works is that the high bidder wins.
Why should someone try to make sure that they bid early so that you have enough time to evaluate whether or not you'll pay more?

i reckon ebay should change the way it works so the sniping programmes dont work anymore.
Instead of having a definite auction end time like 8.30pm tuesday 5th April, if it said the auction would close tuesday 5th april between 4 and 12 pm, and then it ended at a random moment, nobody would know exactly when it would end, sniping would not work and there would be no way to do tactical bids - people would just enter their honest maximum bid, sooner rather than later. And it would be a far more honest and transparent process.
I fucking hate those sniping things, have never used one - but clearly ebay dont dislike them, they could easily stop them working if they felt like it, but they dont (for whatever reason).

making the endtime random doesn't make it more "honest", just more frustrating.
then it would be much more logical to say that each login can make one bid and that's it - at the end of time all bids are compared and highest bid wins.
eBay doesn't stop sniping because it's perfectly within their rules.

I think this is so much fairer and worth notifying ebay about. It still gives everyone plenty of time to put their max bid so what's the problem... it's just more honest. Great idea.

see i checked your auction you linked. you nibbled right from the beggining. seriously you made the first bid! what...you thought no one else would bother to bid!??! why bid first. you are actually the scum of ebay.
"bid once, bid late, bid high" decide how much you will pay for an item at most, and bid that value at the last minute. proxy bidding will take care of the rest.
its retarded to nibble bid. i use ebay regularily and allways snipe.

yes! if everyone sniped, then this woule be exactly how it would work (except if 2 people have the same high bid, the earlier one wins).
it is LOGICAL to decide HOW MUCH you want to pay and then bidding once. it is ILLOGICAL to make little tiny bids. you are just potentially INCREASING the price you will ahve to pay if you win. seriously. fucxers.

i understand you may want to discuss the details in a less public setting.
