Well that is true of most things in life...some find stuff
fun that others don't. Welcome to the world my child, your
eyes have been opened.

linksys wireless cards need the ndiswrapper

sounds like a lot of people are having keyboard errors

i tried ndiswrapper with many different drivers.

some would say that everything was hunky dory, and still not
work.

i couldn't even get iwconfig to affect any of the card's
settings... so, i got a D-link card that would hopefully
work with MadWifi... no luck so far with that either.

i'm so very frustrated.

do you need this wireless thingy?

offline epohs from )C: on 2005-04-03 21:23 [#01552299]
Points: 17620 Status: Lurker

i really want this to work.

for the most part playing around with linux has been really
fun, but this wireless issue is really really sucking.

i've been fucking with it for at least four months, and i
just can't seem to get it to work.

i'm almost to the point of giving up, and just installing
win2k back on this machine for the first time in two years.

offline bryce_berny from chronno (Canada) on 2005-04-03 21:23 [#01552300]
Points: 1568 Status: Lurker

you need to make sure that wireless support (non ham-radio)
is compiled into your kernel

I had problems with that when I first tried using the
ndiswrapper

I'm with you on the frustration thing.. I wanted to shatter
my comp for a few days

i suppose i don't need it, but righ now my windows machine
upstairs is functioning wirelessly, but my wireless router
is at the opposite corner of the house, and downstairs, so
the connection isn't that strong. the router is downstairs
so that i can connect it via ethernet to my linux machine.

sometimes when i'm moving lots of files (read: folders of
mp3s) the connection fails, and i end up with corrupted
mp3s... which is frustrating as shit.

i suppose i could put the router in a more central location,
and just run ethernet cable through the house, but that's
not what i want to do.

plus, i read about other people being able to get wireless
cards to work on linux, so i know it's possible... but for
the son-of-a-bitchin life of me i can't get it to work.

how do i check that my kernel is configured properly?

i tried to manually configure my kernel, and it didn't work
on the first try, so i figured it was more trouble than it
was worth, so i used gentoo's built in genkernel to
make it for me.

offline bryce_berny from chronno (Canada) on 2005-04-03 21:34 [#01552308]

at a rootprompt, do an lsmod and see what modules are loaded
by the genkernel
write them down

then, go to the gentoo installation guide, and read their
manual configuration instructions

make sure to include all of the modules that were listed on
your lsmod, as well as the wireless non ham radio drivers

oh man, i just went to /etc/kernels/, and checked out my
kernel config, and the wireless line was commented out!

...plus, i dont see a module listed in lsmod

dude, if you helped me solve this problem i will be more
grateful than you could ever know. for reals.

linux newb too.

i couldnt get my usb wlan adapter to work no matter what
(just like you), but strangely enough i didnt have to
configure my pcmcia wireless card at all.. i put it
in its slot and it worked.

linux = world of confusion.

r40f: is it working now or what?

btw, turn your rantings into helpful critisism; it's
actually quite hard for veteran developers to understand the
mentality of new users.

if you hate linux, or the distro you tried (and fair
enough), document /exactly/ what you found so retarded about
it.

oh, and try ubuntu, it's quite neat. i don't know what your
friend installed for you but i sure as hell know there's
some retarded fucking distros out there.

no, nothing is working... i've tried two new boot disks and
they don't let me into the cdrom drive. linux is working
more poorly than ever. i don't think it liked my attempt at
a revolt. i get the feeling i'm screwed at this point -
stuck with this lousy linux.

xf - yeah, i know i am clueless about linux, but i get the
general idea and it just isn't my thing. it just isn't
efficient enough for me. even if i wanted to install a
different type of linux (which i don't), i don't think it
will let me. i think it's all really fucked at this point.

You do realise that if your CD-ROM drive is normally D: it
will become E:, any drive after C: is shoved up one due to
RAMDisk being used to hold DOS.

No no no :)

What you need to do is boot up with your floppy. Go into
Fdisk and remove the partition that's there...reformat the
drive as a FAT32 then the computer will restart.
Let it boot up to floppy again, then at the DOS prompt
change it to drive E: or whatever your CD-ROM drive is with
the Windows ME disk in. Then type setup and the Windows
installer should start :)

You could try skipping the fdisk stage and see whether
Windows will let you reformat the drive as part of the
setup.

oh, i guess i skipped a step. i was worried that if the
boot disk couldn't read the cdrom drive now, it wouldn't
read it after formatting.

You start the CD installation from the Windows ME startup
floppy not at boot. It is because back in the dark days
some BIOS didn't support CD booting.

If you computer isn't that powerful (enough to run 2K or XP)
I would recommend you source a copy of 98SE it is much
better than ME...however I am sure ME will do you just fine
:)

No the MS boot disk is the startup disk, they are the same
thing. You just need to be able to access the CD-ROM drive
through DOS to begin the installation. Give me 16 hours,
I'll hop on a plane and come and fix it for you, it will
only take about an hour :D

download this

extract all the files in that zip to a folder, then double
click on install.bat.

you'll then need to put a floppy disk in the drive, and hit
enter.

then you should be able to reboot onto the floppy, and it'll
start wiping the disk... it could take quite a while though,
cause this program is very thourough.

happened. i'm going to try it again...

it just opens install.bat in kwrite.

Would you post on a car repair forum and just say "my car

and there's nothing on my disk that says fdisk, so i guess
