i'll just say what first comes to mind: fight club

did you know, the dust brothers recorded the tenacious d album? they actually produced an album, too, but then some other producer re-did it with lots more distortion, and they were all "oh, yeah, that sounds better" and the tenacious d album that the dust brothers recorded 'n' produced never got released... but, they did do the studio sessions for that album. to this day, i'd really like to hear their version. it was apparently more towards a tenacious d live experience (two fat guys with acoustic guitars) vs. the released production that blew them up into a full rock sound

i guess part of it was where i was at the time: a freshman in college (uni for brits) and just starting to write proper music myself. i remember buying the CD on a school-sponsored trip to be on a robot TV show; i got a full-course credit and an automatic A. we got something magic i'd never heard before, called a "per diem" -- which i remembered from my latin as meaning "per day" -- to buy whatever the fuck we wanted. being in college, it went to alcohol and a blender. i bought an ownership stake in the blender, and i did feel sort of strange when they opened my luggage in security and i had a blender, along with half a handle of bacardi, especially given i wasn't yet 21 at the time. they waved me on
but, yes, it sounded good in the movie. the first time i saw fight club, i wandered in 1/3 through, and i was asking questions about what was going on. my college roommate says, "you're like a child wandering into the middle of a movie" but i hadn't yet seen the big lebowski either, so it was lost on me

i don't really agree. a movie is naturally an escapist, immersive fing, and anything that adds to the effectiveness of this adds to the experience of watching a movie. if you don't want to have a whole team of people trying to move your emotional rods around like that green velvet video, then you're more or less not on board with the concept of movies in and of itself. perhaps you'll find a documentary more tolerable, though undoubtedly it will still poke some of your sore spots

i saw both "Avatar" in 3D (which was lovely). then i few years later, i saw Gary Busy's "Bulletproof," which is mostly known for spawning the puerile word "Butthorn." i noticed that scenes in Butth- er, Bulletproof were clearly split between externals of a tank and scenes shot on a stage mocked up to look like the inside of a tank. it was was incredibly obvious to me what had to be done

i got into the emotion of avatar. but i'm not being having a laugh at it/meself later for the corniness of it

nah man, extradiegetic music is what's abstract!! to be fair i'm not actually against music in films, it's just the act of actually composing a score in this day and age strikes me as a bit strange. i like it when the music is jarring, creates a distancing effect, or is otherwise in conversation with the pictures, but the usual loud hollywood or soft plink plonk pads of indie films are rather unpleasant wallpapers.
i liked the music in It Follows, not so much the music itself but that it sounded chiptune-y, which is an odd choice for a horror film and works very well along with all the strange dateless set choices and seashell e-reader and such

I thought of a few more (mentioned, not mentioned, original, or not)
Lost in Translation Motorcycle Diaries Passenger 57 Barry Lyndon Where the wild things are The thin red line Punch drunk love Candyman The hours The darjeeling limited Stander Heaven’s door Electric dreams Drive (First time I saw this on a bus in china it didn’t have a lot of the cliff Martinez stuff… for ex, in the elevator scene they played Brian Eno An Ascent - whereas in the later version I saw they used new incidental music…the former working better imo)
