funny thing about the Karlheinz on Richard and Richard on
Karlheinz bits is that they are a lot alike - not at all
getting eachothers points, focused completely on what they
think they are trying to do.

I like they way they don't get what the other's going on
about, but then I think Stockhausen is more academic whereas
Dickie is more "wikkid" with a large soupçon of his own
take on "dance music". So... I wish they would get together
in a room and have a wikkid jam, it'd sound shit, but
probably quite jolly.

except wanting them to make some wikkid jam.

even in the fifties and sixties stockhausen was just as
obsessed with himself as he is now, for ages now hes
beliving everyone telling him hes god. alot of the things he
says can't be taken seriously - the guy is a mad bastard

Oh these old German artists, that take themselves a tad too
seriously. I think Stockhausen is often lazily invoked as
some influence on IDM, I don't think many electronic artists
take on his ideas really, or to any great exent. I mean, I
don't know, but.... you do wonder what people, like him,
like Dickie, want to achieve with music. Do they even know?

well purely seen in just the advances made technologically
to accomodate composers like Stockhausen, yes, it has
influence on electronic music these days.

also the I would think that the general approach to
electronic music has changed because of Stockhausen et al,
making it easier for "IDM peoples" to find a public these
days.

I'm talking out of my arse now.

more to the point, what is eric von daniken trying to
achieve?

I mean, it's not like Aphex made "Gergubalonx Squib" because
of a record of Stockhausen's he's heard, but more because he
thinks it's wikkid and him and his mates like it.

the influence won't be directly, I mean. frrrrr.

Well that's what I mean, as you say "Stockhausen et al" or
"the influence won't be directly" yet more often than not
it's "Oh yes IDM, Stockhausen, Eno, then Aphex". It's just
laziness.

how do you mean "laziness"?

as in: just repeating those supposed influences, but never
even listening to their music and actually trying to make a
connection?

I think it's kind of impossible to deny the connection.

Exactly, as in "just repeating those supposed
influences
". On a wider scale yes there's a Stockhausen
influence, but I don't hear a specific influence in the
music of Aphex Twin or that many artists, not directly.

is anyone saying that, though?

I believe most people mean a general influence, not a direct
one. but yes, most people do just repeat this, without
trying to find out what this actually means.

and it can be fun - listening to old Raymond Scott stuff and
hearing connections to things made today.

I think it's a temptation for the lazier critic within such
a vague non-genre to just rattle off the names a few beardy
old academics and head off down the pub... it seems like
some people need to establish a sort of commonly-held
Avant Minimal Wikkid Improv Rave (that's
AMWIR, fact fans) timeline to make life easier for
themselves and draw a neat little box around what's a very
pluralistic "scene", i guess.

Not that i'm, like, denying Stockhausen or Eno or Wendy
Carlos or whoever any props or anything... i'm no
expert and i'm more than willing to believe that their
methods and techniques were all very groundbreaking and so
on, but i'm certainly no AMWIR fan either.
