I'm lazy, so here's part of another thread on the subject
explaining
why
vinyl is better, and why CDs are really not good. Plenty
more where that came from too :

"I have been into HI-FI as well as recording etc for about
20 years. this is such an old argument, you wouldn't beleive
it. Anyway, played back on PROPER EQUIPMENT, vinyl is much
better than CD. Period. Ask any hi-fi nut. The mere fact
that it is ANALOGUE means the resolution is much greater
(INFINITE) compared to CD. CD, and any kind of sampling, is
just that, SAMPLING. It is taking snapshots of where the
voltage is. It doesn't 'get' the whole voltage. Digital
audio throws away an INFINITE amount of detail compared to
vinyl. Read and understand this. The BANDWIDTH reduction
that you talk about (20k for CD, 15k for vinyl) is not the
same thing. Go and read what I said about the top end. MOST
PEOPLE OVER 30 (especialy if they frequent loud places) cand
even fucking HEAR above 16k. The diffrence is HALF AN
OCTAVE, it's not very much musicaly. The roll of is GENTLE
rather than the STEEP, SHARP, RINGY, OVERBRIGHT top of CD.
CD's problem is this filter. It has to be really sharp.
Beleive me (because I build audio filters) that making a
filter that is so sharp is very hard, it will always produce
artifacts... PLUS vinyl goes LOWER than CD!!! You say the
cut from 15k to 20k is a lot? What about the cut from 20hz
to 10hz? THATS A WHOLE FREAKIN OCTAVE!

Now, read and understand what I say, vinyl has a higher
resolution than CD. This is fact. It is fuckin SCIENCE.
Vinyl is also easier to cue than CD - it can take me as
little as 10 or 15 seconds to pick a record, put it on, cue
it, and mix it in. try doing that with a CD! The freakin
drawer won't be closed by that time!..

Yes, a LOT of producers (most now??!) mix onto CD and get it
pressed up. However, the mastering process for vinyl is VERY
different to CD. The process of physicaly cutting the wax
introduces warm, musical distortions to the sound that CD
can't do. These distortions aren't the nasty hi frequency
exaguration of CD, but musical harmonic distortions, that
make sound easier to hear. The final carrier for the music
is VITAL in it's quality. If you want cold, clinical tones,
choose CD.

Finaly, i ain't an extremist. I use MP3's (hi-Q encoded from
carefully recorded vinyl) and play about with Traktor on my
computer. It's fun, and sure I could do a set like that, but
the quality and sheer hands-on of vinyl cant be beat. You
say that pressing a button is the same as pushing a record
about? CRAP! A button is a digital thing, ON or OFF. Pushing
vinyl is analogue, I can stop it, push it back, forward
slowly etc the control is, again, INFINITE. thats a lot more
than 0 | 1.

You do the math. "

It started off quite reasonable and then lost my interest by
raving and going a bit berserk.

style isn't important here, content is. I don't see anything
unreasonable about it. Do elaborate..

CDs are easier to use for what? Mini-frisbees? Safety ninja
starts? Coasters?

they're easier to cut in half because they're
smaller..especially the 3" ones.

Vinyl sounds good because tiny magic fairy musicians live in
the grooves. Listen to their happy song.

hahahah - thanks for proving my argument with this post. we
agree on much of this, but i have concluded the opposite is
true.

as i said before, if you have "PROPER EQUIPMENT" ($$$$$$),
vinyl is lovely. but it is only theoretically better
quality than cds because i have never in my life seen a
record completely free of "artifacts" - dust, warps and
scratches, which mar the sound. cd's are a basically
indestructable format - they can be washed in the dishwasher
and there is no change in the sound.

vinyl is in no way easier to cue than a cd unless you are a
dj or retarded. there's a "next track button" - check it
out.

"The process of physicaly cutting the wax introduces warm,
musical distortions to the sound that CD can't do. " -- i
know this, that's why i said it. it is a distortion
of the sound. it is NOT better - it is different than what
was intended on the recording. it is much worse. warmth is
bullshit.

if you are an audiophile, enjoy your expensive stereo and
keep your vinyl in an airtight safe. i can't afford it
personally. cd's are cheaper, more durable, easier to carry
around, hold more music and sound the way they should every
time.

You fags need to listen to Edison wax cylinders if you
really want to know how music should sound: thin and
scratchy, the way God intended.

not to mention that cd's hold twice as much music.

the only downside is the lack of giant-sized artwork.

CD's are awesome. I prefer vinyl but I can't deny the
quality of CD. CDs are a great invention.
