DJing with Traktor

I've never really had the skill, dexterity, patience or
time to learn to DJ the traditional way (vinyl or CD),
despite a couple of false starts.

I've recently started playing around with Traktor and
discovered that it's an amazing, easy to use piece of
software (once you've figured it all out).

I'm going to start DJing with it (on a laptop) here in
Lithuania some time soon.

My question is, are laptop DJs taken seriously in, say the
UK or other countries? Not that many people can afford vinyl
here, so most use CDs and some use laptops. But how about in
other places?

I mean, it *is* much easier to DJ using Traktor - so do DJs
using get laughed of stage? Is there much vinyl snobbery?

It's just that when I return to the UK, I might try to get a
DJ gig if all goes well here....

It doesn't really matter as long as the music is good.

traktor is great.. my problem: i have a laptop with an
onboard shit soundcard, plus my real soundcard, a pcmcia
soundcard (echo indigo io) 1 in, 1 out. is it possible to
configure traktor to do the master out on the pcmcia card,
and the headset on the shit card?

in atomix virtual dj i can do this, but i can't figure it
out with traktor.

are using.

As long as the DJ have a good selection, I really don't care
what equipment is used.

RDJ, Luke Vibert and Richard Devine use it.

"DJ" means playing other people's tracks, as well as my
own, off a laptop running Native Instruments Traktor (just
like every other laptop DJ!)

as a laptop dj you have access to much more music. for
instance, most netlabels never release cd's or vynil
records.

Cylob is such an awfull DJ.

They had a set posted on the warp site back when radio was
still up.

There is also hordes of out of print stuff available in
slsk. As well as the fact that 2 rare mp3's arent going to
cost you fourty dollars.

yes, that's right. there are so many advantages i can only
be sorry for the "vinyl snobs".

Ah, but what about that Italian DJ who was recently fined
1.4 million Euros for playing pirate MP3s at a nightclub?

In some scenes you will get dissed for it. Here in London it
seems laptops are the standard when it comes to electronic
music but this is not the case everywhere and I've seen a
lot of bitching on messageboards about people using
Traktor... Playing vinyl is a lot more fun although from a
listener's point of view I don't really care as long as the
music's good!

well, if you cannot use original material than you'd better
use only tracks from netlabels like monotonik, kahvi
collective, rohformat, etc. there are thousands of hours of
free music out there. most of it exceptionally good.

i've just checked out Traktor and it seems like a great
program. The only thing is...one mouse can't replace two
hands...maybe i haven't learned all the features just yet.
has anyone made the plunge to use Final Scratch? its like
the best of both worlds

I know to me it would not matter what you used for DJing, as
it's all about what tracks you play, and not how you play
them.

i've used traktor when i was dj-ing a couple of times, and
it went down pretty good. just make sure you have a
soundcard with 2 out, so you can monitor with your headset.

My only gripe with Traktor is that the pitchcontrol is very
crude. I'd like the increments to be of 0.1 percents steps.
I guess it is fine as it is when you only use mp3s, but it's
not accurate enough when I'm doing a vinyl/computer setup.

Now that you mention it it's true, I've always thought that
I'm doing something wrong on the Traktor side - vinyl + mp3
is my usual setup and have noticed that sometimes it's just
necessary to tweak the sl1200 pitch get it just right

2 oyt? what about 1 out + 1 out? traktor is supposed to be
the best but can't handle two soundcards. i have to stick to
atomix then.

I just use one soundcard with an audio jack splitter cable
and use the left channel for monitoring, right channel for
PA.

It's crude, and it's in mono, but it works.

if you put on a good set, you put on a good set, period.

i've tried using traktor a few times, but i don't have the
patience. i've seen it used amazingly though.

My soundcard supports four sterio outs. Isn't this normal?

As far as I know, you can convert on of your recording
channels (line in or microphone) to a line out...

Aphex's atp set was amazing. I really loved it. It was messy
at times, but over all, excellent. I wasn't there or
anything. Got the mp3's

Really? Does anyone know how to do this? It would be pretty
useful.

As long as you are not using an on board soundcard. Well,
most on board ones at least. My on board will let you do
that as well.
But what you need to do is go into the audio settings, and
there should be a dialogue that lets you decide what goes
where. It should work on even a shitty $50 game soundcard,
because the demand for 5.1 with all the games released in
the past 3 years. Its kind of standard. I know its pretty
easy on most creative soundcards, and not that much harder
on most others. It depends on your soundcard, so I can't
really walk you through it (cause I don't know what card you
own, and very well probly don't own the one you do).

it works on the sounblaster live if u get the moded kx
drivers it lets u assign outputs to differentc hannels (i
think)

on a seperate note i just got traktor and im loving it. i do
feel like im cheatoing but fuck it who cares. also the whole
not actually saving audio is wierd i like ti though i can
save alot more mixes as long as i dont move my mp3's (which
i dont)
