how many demos have you sent out?

and what kind of response (if any) have you had?

i haven't sent any demos out yet - i don't feel confident
enough that i'd get anywhere.

but many of you guys on here are totally record-deal-worthy,
and i'm sure that some of you have sent demos off....i would
just like to read about your experiences with labels and
what kind of things they said about your music :D

0, but none of the replies have been negative which is a
plus.

I sent one to John Peel, but I doubt very much he'll be
getting back to me :P

the stuff of yours that i've heard (is admittedly from a few
months back, since i'm back on dialup) is pretty cool

1 (one).

the reply was quite nice, albeit negative.

I have also sent multiple demos to Donna Summer for his
netradioshow at wfmu.org, called "advanced dungeons &
dragons". he played a couple of my things and he was pushing
me to start sending out demos. that's been quite a while
back now.

he did start doing his radioshow again a few months back and
it's a nice place to get response from. he loves music and
not so much one genre - he is very critical though and he
will only play something "on air" if he really likes it.

since you didn't say who that was pointed at, i'm gonna
assume it was me (the threadstarter, twisted threadstarter)

yes i know mine sucks, hence my reluctance to actually send
stuff out.....maybe when my material isn't wholly based in

he seems really nice. i like his show.

i sent him a remix for his remix contest but it wasn't
selected as a winner. probably because it was incredibly
long and not particularly good.

since looking at the responses on here, i've only just
realised.......my question was a really commercial thing to
ask! :(

you guys don't need labels. you don't need record deals.

you make great music, you distribute it through the
community and however else you do. you don't need a revenue
from it, you do it for the love of doing it.

i'm sorry - i kinda feel dumb for asking now.

he is really nice. his love for good music is really
infectious.

I tried making one of those remixes too, but I couldn't
think of what to do with the source material. :(

let's break was so difficult to remix. mine was kind of
noisy and weird. i would love to hear yours... i'm curious
what it would sound like.

what's tipp-ex? is that a drug used by professional working
women in the sixties causing gentle hallucinations like
walking into a dali painting and having their faces melt as
they walk through the desert?

giginger

*shoots my head off in shame*

i guess i asked the question because i feel that there is a
lot of talent here, and i just wondered if anyone had gotten
any success with regards to labels - i totally believe that
a lot of you could get a deal.

and no, i don't do any kind of drug/solvent abuse

*turns up the nitrous oxide*
what a lovely way to die

i wish i had a more useful response, but i've only sent out
one demo to a label, and received no response. i did send
three cds of stuff to an established artist at his request
after he heard an mp3 of a track (the one that was played on
pomme's show), and he said he really liked the discs, but
i'm still waiting for more extensive comments... he doesn't
operate a label or anything so i don't imagine it will
amount to anything, but it's nice to get positive feedback
since he's one of my favorite artists...

in general, though, zero commercial potential = no more
demos going out...

3 or 4 i think

> and what kind of response (if any) have you had?

I got 2 "record deals" - but one label went belly-up before
releasing any of my stuff and the other one technically
isn't a proper label (but i am still very proud).

Through various connections I'm getting a 1000 CD release on
SlowFoot Records sometime soon. Which is rather
excting-although the album isn't quite ready.

I gave up on demos and just met people who got me to places.

I've never posted music here because I'm not really "one of
the gang" or whatever, and I reckon it would get ignored.
And of course, people seem to have the misconeption that 17
year olds can't make good music. ;)

at least 10, though ive simply forgotten a bunch.

got a reply from imputor?, prospect recordings, narita,
kranky, merck.

all of which were good, and got deals on prospect (although
just for one track) and recently relerased a 12" on narita.
nothing tentative with the other two yet.

all the others, no reply. toytronic was one i remember, cant
remember the others. mostly if a label doesn't care they
wont reply. on a few rare instances theyll reply if they
think you have potential, of maybe they are just trying to
be nice.

friend of mine sent to MORR, and got a reply. no deal but it
was nice of them to reply.

most adults can't make good music either, though. most of
any group of people can't make good music. good music is a
tiny percent of the pie, imo.
