i run winXP on a somewhat old computer which apparently has
outdated usb ports that don't fully support this usb bar
storage device i have. When i plug it in, windows detects
the device and says 'hi speed usb device plugged into non hi
speed port'. when i click that message windows tells me that
the device will work, but only at reduced speed.
Furthermore, it says i should update the usb controller,
though i have no idea how. Now, there appears to be no trace
of the device anywhere. It's not listed as a temp drive in
the 'my computer' window, nor is there a 'send to' option
when i right click a file. What i do get is a 'safely remove
hardware' icon in the bottom right corner. When i click it,
it lists:

USB Mass Storage Device
USB Bar USB Device -> expand: Generic Volume (G:)

In device manager no errors are given. 'Device is working
properly'

the install disk that came with the device is for win98
only.

Go to the website for your storage device and download
updated drivers.

ok well it seems to be installed but i still couldnt find
it. Just to see what would happen i typed 'g:' in the
command box and it opens the son of a bitch.

so the G: drive exists, and i can even drag files to it, but
it's not listed in 'my computer'

when i'm in the window for G: removable Disk, and go up one
folder, i end up at 'my computer' but can only go back to
the G: window by typing it in the address bar.

any ideas on how this can happen?

You can hide drives in my computer so maybe G is hidden. I
can't remember how to hide them though which means I can't
tell you how to unhide them. Sorry. Although on XP it should
autoplay when you plug it in.

sounds like your windows installation is seriously borked.

look for viruses/spyware.

It is a USB2 device. Your motherboard controller is for USB
1.1 The reason for the win 98 only driver disc is because
98 didn't have native USB support where as subsequent OS's
have.

There is nothing to worry about, it will work fine with your
USB connections you have, just that the data transfer rate
is drastically reduced.

If transfer speed is an issue it is possible to get USB2
expansion PCI cards, although some chipsets have issues with
the cheaper models.

There is no software driver or firmware update that will
make the existing ports any quicker.

As for the auto drive letter assignment, it still seems to
be a buggy implimentation under Windows XP, sure it will
assign a letter but there are occassions when for some
unknown reason you connect the device again it will get
another letter assigned (which can be really annoying
beleive me :P), these problems can increase when using USB2
devices for some reason. Provided you can access it, the
data is tranferring and you have no other problems then I
wouldn't worry.

to fix the drive letter assignment of your drive, you go to
control pannel > administrative tools > computer management
> storage > disk management. tool me a fuggin while to find
that menu, and thats where you can do ANYTHING related to
drive assignment in xp. goodluck
