are you recording out of a sound board, or with a mic?

is this the ae thing? You need to find a way to bribe the soundman so you can get a proper recording, hehe.
how much money do you want to spend?

Umm, i've never tried to record a live set, but from what little i know i'd say get an omnidirectional condenser mic instead of a unidirectional, otherwise your recording is going to sound hell of weird. Unless you're pointing it at the speaker stack all night. I think some mics are built for higher volume too, so if you're looking to record gigs only then go for one of these. The minidisc player should have multiple recording levels (usually -44db, -20db and 0db), record at 0db because it'll clip and distort something rotten otherwise.
If you've got the money maybe buy some in-ear binaural mics, the recording should sound exactly like what you hear at the gig. I don't know enough about specific makes and models to recommend for or against with MD recorders or mics, but it's mostly the recording level you should be thinking about when buying i guess.
Bear in mind i've never done it so i could be talking directly from my colon on this one.

better yet, a stereo microphone!
but really the best recordings come from somebody plugging into the board.

Yes, I have recorded some live shows with my little Sony ECM-MS907 stereo condenser microphone and they turned out beautiful.
