Dunno about DAT, i can imagine them being quite expensive. You can pick up some cheap but decent minidisc recorders on eBay though, just plug in an omnidirectional condenser mic and away you go.

aha, and isnt normal digital recorder better ? you dont need a mic to use that, plus probably you have more time to record than with a minidisk...

I have a digital recorder that is nice because at the end of the day I can just plug in the usb and load the samples onto my computer.
archos
Records 128kbps mp3 max, so the compression might bother some folks. I don't have a problem with it though.

Yeah, i can imagine there being a lot better gear out there, depends how much you want to spend. I'm not exactly an authority on the subject to be honest, but i'm perfectly happy with my wee little minidisc recorder. Only cost me £35 and it does the job perfectly well, 80 or so minutes on one disc is easily enough unless you want to do some seriously extended field recordings.

heh, naah, 80 minutes would do easily. ive seen some nice ones that allow you to record app. 2 hours, easy USB interface, small size, and all of this for something about 60euros. thats a good deal i guess.

I have a special recorder in my skull linked directly to my ears. I received it from Heaven, Inc., and it there was no charge.

ya'know what i use?
a video camera. the digital recording quality is same as dat. not sure how great the actualy audio board is in regards to before the sound get digitized, but anyway..erm
its small, and i carry it around sometimes anyway, so why not just record audio to a mini-dv tape if you have a dv camera. not a bad solution for me.
