Wave/Particle Duality

I find it fascinating

The extension of this experiment involves placing a wave or
particle detector in front of one of the slits. If it is a
wave detector the photon behaves as a wave and vice versa
with a particle detector thereby proving the subjective
nature of perception and the pointlessness of all discourse
of mind or reality.

OK, so it makes sense that the pattern for light waves is
just like the one for water. But where does the bizarre part
come in?

Welll you see how a single photon will form the interference
pattern? That implies that it has some innate knowledge of
the other slit causing the interference, which is strange
enough, but when a particle detector is place in front of
the slit that the photon is fired through- THE INTERFERENCE
PATTERN DISAPPEARS!

you're saying that even machines are subject to interpreting
input differently? Do they have some "explanation" for it,
or are they more inclined to say that Descartes was right
while extending his theories to include machines?

physics 101 all over again!!! weee!

in light of that, I'd like you to read the thread called
"why is elusive being badgered" or whatever that was
called.. maybe it was "flamed," but anyway.. I know you know
which thread it was since you posted in it. Then I'd like
you to think about how certain phrasings make your words
seem condescending (sp?) even though this situation doesn't
necessarily imply that you should be.. that could be a
"nostalgic" sentece, but dreamy eyes aren't part of text,
and thus that only seems condescending.

Are you calling me an asshole because I was condescending
(sp? me either) to elusive? Does that make me the
condescending(fuck google spelling) king? I love him
personally, I just want to beat the republican out of him.

as to the thread at hand ( and isn't it quite cosy)
.pretty good explaination

What it's saying is that 'trying' to know the nature of a
particle effects its nature.

It's collapse of the wave function.

It is very interesting. I made a track about it once which i
will post tomorrow.

The wave function just has to take its vitamins and try
harder.

T'is impossible to predict the velocity of a particle and
know it's position. Furthermore, t'is impossible to predict
the position of a particle having known it's velocity. Many
physicists believe that even God cannot know position and
velocity of a particle.

This led physicists (I can't remember the physicist who
coined the particle/wave duality) to use waves and particles
interchangebly. With waves, the probability of a particle
resting within the area of the distribution of the normal
curve within the wavelength can only be determined. There
cannot be any singularity. I belive the string theory
evolves this theory even further.

I really don't know what the fuck I'm talking about, but
I've been on a Steven Hawking kick recently. This shit
blows my mind.

I think you are exaggerating for effect, but still: I don't
think the first implies the latter. Even if all knowledge is
subjective, we can still construct truths together as
communities, share our subjectivity, etc.

This experiment is beyond the explaination of quantum
mechanics. It is true that you cannot know a photon's
location- tis' a fundamental law, but this experiment is not
determining position only wether it is acting as a wave or
particle. It is the observer that determines the nature of
the particle.

String theory has nothing to do with this. It is an
attempt to come up with a grand unification theory to govern
all physics.
